IB E R 28. 1911 The Graphic extends sympathy t o President T a ft who was laid up with a cold the first o f the week. It mnst have taken a big one to handle him. In order to prepare the public for the worst, the report is being sent out that the turkey crop is short this year. Very well, a piece o f beef neck will go farther than turkey anyw ay a t Thanks giving dinner. __ I f Jonathan Bourne and W. S. U’Ren are republicans, as they are claiming to be, by what name shall the fellows who have been voting the republican ticket and working in the interests o f the republican party in Oregon all these years be designated? I t is not an unusual thing these days to hear of a man who wants to put aw ay his first wife for a younger and prettier one, but a San Francisco husband showed up in court the other day and obtained a divorce from his wife on the plea that her comely figure was too great a ’ luxury for a man who earns only $5 to $6 a day—‘ ‘to o pretty for , a poor man” he said. But these Californians are alw ays trying to do things differently from other people. Just a word to the Southern Pacific officials for the accommo dation o f the public. It trains for the south on arrival a t the station in Newberg would pull up about tw enty feet further it would enable passengers who a lig h t from the tra in to pass over the track to the walk down Main street. As the stops are now made passengers are competed to either w ait until all the express is handled or pass around the end o f the train by wading a muddy street. Grapes are easily grow n and cared for and the fruit is one of the most wholesome that grows. There is not a family in or about Newberg that is located on their own property, but that could have within a few years, with scarcely any cost, all the home grown grapes they could use, and yet there is not one family in a hundred that has a grape vine growing about their homes. I t is such a habit with us o f looking on luxuries as the things that come to us over the counter o f the grocery, that we are prone to overlook the many opportun ities for providing them for our selves, first hand, here in Oregon. On Friday of last week a num ber of high-up officials o f the Southern Pacific, including Mr. Campbell and Mr. Fields, spent considerable time in Newberg, ac quainting themselves w i t h the situation, relative to the need o f better depot facilities. The old boggie o f the present site loomed above the horizon as it always does when any new improve ments are suggested. The visi tors stated to Station Agent, G. W. James that $15,000 had been set aside for depot improve ments at Newberg which would be available when a satisfactory site for a new depot could be secured. The Graphic has dis cussed the depot question at length on divers occasions in times past, and we will simply say now that since it appears that the railroad officials don regard a matter settled until it is settled right, it is up to them to take the bull by the boms and undo some things that were foolishly done by others who preceded them, if they want to d o the best thing for the rail road company and for Newberg. Congressman Lafferty is at home making speeches to his constituents in the Second Dis trict, but it is no go. Lafferty is best known as the man who threw aw ay his chance by mak ing a fool oif himself in undertak ing to get sweet on a young W a s h i n g t o n , D. C., High School girl, whose picture he saw in the newspapers as a member o f the graduating class. Intimations had been made o f like escapades before, and this was the one piece o f silliness that served to convince the public that Lafferty is too near the “ pudd’nhead” class to prop erly represent an Oregon dis trict in Congress.
