Ths Tables Turned.
A story is told of a high Bast In
dian officer who was in the habit of
soundly thrashing his servants when
they displeased nim. One day he
ordered his khansamah to go to a
summer house in the compound and
wait for him there, presently tam
ing up with a heavy norsewlup. He
then addressed the offebder:
"How, you scoundrel, I’ve got you
in a place where no one can hear,
and I ’ll just thrash you within an
inch o f your life!"
The servant, though a man -o f
powerful physique, squirmed, na
tive-like “ Sah, you sure no one
can hear?"
"Yea,you scoundrel; I’ve brought
you here on purpose!”
"Then, sah, I think I thrash
yon!" And he did it to thoroughly
that bis master was not visible for
a week.
•#** Before Prayers.
An Episcopal missionary, says
Lippincotfs, visited one of the out
lying districts in hia territory for
tne purpose of conducting prayer in
the nome of a large family not con
spicuous for its piety. He made
known his intentions to the woman
o f the house, and she murmured
vaguely that she would go out and
“ see." She was long in returning,
and after a tiresome wait the mis
sionary went to the door and called,
with some impatience:
"Aren’t you coming in? Don’t
you care anything about yonr
souls
‘Souls!’’ yelled the head of the
family from the orchard. "W e
haven’t got time to fool with our
souls when the bees are swarmin'."

A young man was standing at the
gate waiting for hia sweetheart, and
when at last she appeared he re
marked kindly:
"What a time you have kept me
waiting!“
"Oh. desk roe, how fussy you
............... jserved. “ Why, 1 didn’t
promise to meet yon until a quarter
of 8, and it’e only two minutes after
8 now.”
*Ab, Margie dear," replied the
young man, “ hat you have made e
alight mistake. You were to hay#

It if more difficult now then it
used to be to secure • piece of gov
ernment laid. As the public do
main has been shrinking in area
the government has frown more
vigilant in compelling ODaervanoe of
the law relating to the manner in
which such land may be secured.
There wea a time, however, when it
was comparatively easy for land
bbers to get title to as much
d as they wanted with the aid
o f a few accommodating witnesses.
The commissioner o f the general
land office tella a story illustrating
how this was sometimes done and
showing incidentally that there are
men who have a fine sense o f tech
nicalities of the law.
Under the desert land act it is
neceasary, in order to prove up a
claim, to produce evidence that the
claimant has taken water on to ev
ery legal subdivision of his entry.
A certain claimant, says the com
missioner, took a party o f
in a buckboard to drive over his
claim so that they would be able to
testify regarding hia compliance
with the requirements of the law.
He was a conscientious man and
wanted no one to swear to anything
but the actual truth. He according
ly tied a bottle o f water behind the
buck hoard and then he punctilious
ly drove over the land and every le
gal subdivision thereof. This being
accomplished, the witnesses were
given blank forms to fill out, and
they were about to make affidavit to
the allegations therein set forth
when one of them stopped and,
pointing to the bottle, snowed his
comrades that the cork had come
out of it and that all the water had
escaped.
‘ Gentlemen," he said, “ I can’t
sign this affidavit. How do I know
that there was any water in the bot
tle when we drove over the claim ?*’
