I4, 191I 9 WOMAN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION T he Tem perance E ssa y contest prom oted b y the S tate W o m a n ’s C h ristian Tem perance U n ion o f O regon this year, has met w ith g o o d ly response. M a n y o f the essays sent in have not met the requirem ents th a t m ake them a v a ila b le for prizes, in some cases fo r the reason th a t conditions w e fe not quite understood, and in m ore cases the y o u n g people h a v e sent such essays a s had been prepared tor other use, and w h ile dealing w ith the temper ance problem did not touch u p o n topics assisgned. O n the w h o le the W . C . T . U . can con- g ra d u a te themselves th a t pupils in colleges and public schools are w r it in g and stu d y in g the subject o f temperance an d in a practical m anner. The prise essay contest w ill be continued next y e a r and it " i s hoped th a t m an y o f the students o f b o th public schools a n d colleges w ill begin early in th e y e a r to prepare to contest for these fine prizes C o r.
