Wind, water, volcano fire and those mysterious internal forces that now and then exert their fury and make the old earth trem ble, all are sculptors that year by year and century after century mold and shape the earth’s topography, rounding off and smoothing down and filling up in one place, while at the same time they rend and break and tear hill and plain, hurl up new mountain ranges, make new islands in the sea, and spread desolation in vast areas that for ages hare been •miling gardens. There are several noteworthy ex amples o f these masterpieces o f world-making sculpture that hart long attracted tourists, and the re cent opening o f newer regions through the encroachments o f com merce and pioneering is daily bring ing to public knowledge more o f these interesting phenomena. Among the Canadian Rockies tow ers Cathedral Peak, which fo r un told ages since first perhaps some awful seismic upheaval reared this towering range, the winds and the glaciers have been carving. Now it stands with two twin peaks nearly as symmetrical as the towers of those wonderful edifices Which chal lenge the admiration o f the tonrist in Europe. Better known, yet no less ad mired, is the Mount o f the Holy Cross in Colorado. This peak tow ers aloft to a height o f 14,175 feet and on its eastern face, risible for miles around, is the figure o f a gi gantic cross. The appearance is due to perpetual snow which fills the cavities of intersecting canyons. The upright o f the cross is 1,200 feet long and the arms measure from 200 to 500 .ie e t Thu moun tain forms the western wall o f a great natural amphitheater and the mighty cross upreared to meet the rising ran seems to an impression able beholder to be an exalted shrine reared by Omnipotence, with the surrounding amphitheater a gathering place fo r the nations. The imagination o f tourists has long been exercised to discern the figures which the two beautiful Mexican mountains, Popocatepetl and Ixtacchihuatl, are said to re semble. The latter name is Aztec fo r “ The White Lady,” and the Mexicans have long held a legend that when Adam and Eve were driv en from the Garden o f Eden they wandered over the face o f the earth in search o f another place aa fair. The valley o f Mexico seemed to hem a second Eden and here they sat down to rest. Wearied with her journey, Eve slept and faithful Adam kept watch over her. In this eition they were both frozen and .ve so remained to this day.— Brooklyn Eagle. i M . H . It is a matter o f common obser vation that grasa does not grow so well d ose to trees as in the open. The same is true o f grains. Experi ments in this country and in Eng- and have shown that the deleter ious effects upon one another of grasa and trees are mutual. The ;rees suffer as well as the grass and Tain. This is especially true o f ruit trees. The cause is ascribed to the excretion by the trees, on the one hand, o f substances poisonous jo the grass, and by the grass, on he other hand, o f substances pois onous to the trees. It thus appears that the failure o f grass to grow well near trees should not be as cribed to too much shade, nor to the exhaustion bv the tree roots o f the ood needed by the grass.— Harper’s Weekly. ________________ The Reason.
