NEWBERQ ORAPHIC. MMvwterg, I B D t D K V X S T THURSDAY M ORNING E. H. WOODWARD, Eiitor H i N t t f f $1.50 Per Year in Advance. The bridge meeting held Tues day night was big enough and enthusiastic enough to give ample evidence that there is no division o f sentiment in Nefe- berg, respecting the need o f a w agon bridge over the Wil lamette river at this point. The s t e a m e r G o v e r n o r is booked to leave Seattle on next Tuesday tor San Francisco, the entire passenger list to be made up o f newly-weds. Out on the ocean w ave with a whole ship load o f sweetness—a lot o f which win doubtless go over the railing before the voyage is ended. v ' A W ashington dispatch says Unde Joe Cannon has been noti fied that a man whom he once befriended when he was in need, and w ho afterward went to In dia and made a fortune, has left his fortune o f $2,500,000 to go t o the Speaker. That beats being Speaker o f the House by several plunks. fc fjp mM Last Sunday’s Oregonian con tained a long article on the rail road building being done by Jim Hill in Oregon, and m telling tbe prospects for the new year the statement was made that work would begin early in the year on the Oregon Electric extension south from Salem to Albany and Eugene, and also southwest to Newberg and McMinnville. As the Graphic has stated before, Newberg stands ready to give Uncle Jim the glad hand a t any time. fr ■ Hon. Tim othy Brownhill w ho w as in Newberg Tuesday even ing said that it would be his endeavor as a member o f the legislature to represent the people o f Yamhill county, and that he desired to get their views on a number o f questions that would m ost likely claim the attention o f the coming session. Some o f these questions are mentioned in a communication that will be found in the Graphic this week. Read them over and it you want to be heard, let Mr. Brownhill know your views. He makes a fair proposition. Station Agent, G. W. Games informs the Graphic that the sale o f tickets at the Newberg S. P. office during the year 1910 amounted to $30,054.27 which was an increase over the sales for 1909 o f $3,175.86. The total business done at the office during the year amounted to $107,138.- 48 which exceeded the previous year’ s business by $12,867.67. H ow would it do to present these figures to the S. P. officials in Portland and ask them if such a record does not entitle Newberg t o some consideration—an entry in to Union Depot with passenger trains for instance. Ì r .8 1 .: • 'f • The Yamhill County Poultry Association is putting up a fine show o f fancy fow ls in Newberg this week and everybody in New berg and the surrounding coun try ought to go and see for them selves the class o f poultry that is being bred in this, one o f the best poultry breeding sections o f the Northwest. A look in at the show is an inspiration to anyone w ho enjoys an exhibition o f an industry where there is keen com petition. Then it is well to remember that since the poultry industry is one o f the m ost im portant that we have t o consider, the management of such an association deserves proper recognition and encour agement. It only costs the nominal fee o f ten cents. Don’t fail to see the poultry show. BACK TO THE PLOW . Chief am ong the troubles o f the American people seems to be the fact that they are all politicans, says the Westerner. We com plain o f our non-interest in government affairs when the truth stands forth plain as day that we are already half craxy over the subject, and getting worse. In the face o f the greatest temporal prosperity that this land o f ours has ever seen, we walk the streets and tear our hair over “ conditions.” What is the condition? A land rolling in wealth—every granary and warehouse full to bursting; work to be had by every one whom the law permits to w ork; mar kets good, and the populace buy ing autom obiles by the hundred thousands, and everything else in proportion. And thst> other conditions are these:; Thsilbfcvery man, wom an and child ts pos sessed o f a specially invented and patented “ ism,” by the opera tion o f which he hopes forthwith to reform the government. If it isn’t tariff, it’s tax, and if it isn’t tax, it’s government ownership, and if not governownership then prohibition or eqyal suffrage, and if not these things then in surgency * or conservation, or maybe a new nationalism, al together, upon the heels o f which pandemonium we draft each day, somewhere, a drastic platform and held some sort o f an election to change our policy and plan o f existence. Do you wonder at the unrest? Can we criticize capital to tRe cyclone cellar? A full stomach and money to spend no longer satisfy us. More temporal blessings than we have ever before possessed are now sufficient. F or we have left the plow standing in the field and have taken to the soap box—we are all became agitators. i t is a great game, to be sure, but is it really “ w orth the candle.” A peaceful crow d suf fers fewer fatalities than a how l ing, racing m ob. The man who tends carefully to his w ork each day and doesn’t talk to o much, usually gets enough to eat and wear. Also he achieves less wrinkles. In view o f the fact that our allotted time is but three score and ten and that we pass this w ay but once, isn’t it reasonable to assume that some o f us, at leait, are acting the fool? That great sea fighter is to be invited to attend the Portland celebration. Wealth in Oregon streams, as well as in the fertile soil o f the Beaver state, is shown by the figures o f the annual take o f salmon in Oregon waters, chief ly the Columbia River. A total o f 290,000 cases, 35,000,000 pounds, was packed during the past year, having a value o f $3,500,000. OBITUARY. James F. Adams was born in Putman county, Indiana, August 17th, 1840. He died near New berg, Oregon, December 31st, 1910, aged 70 years, 4 months and 14days. His parents moved to near Des Moines, lo w s, when he was 9 years old, and there he grew to manhood. While on a visit to Missouri he enlisted in Captain William H. Lynch’ s Co. D. 32nd. Missouri Infantry Volunteers. He was enrolled on September 15th, 1862, to serve for three years or during the war. He served in the 1st. Division 15th, Army Corp, and was in several hard fought battles. Was w i t h General Grant at Vicksburg siege, and with Gen. Sherman on his famous march to the sea. He was dis charged at Louisville, Kentucky, July 18th, 1865, by reason o f the expiration of his term o f service. At Unionville, Missouri, on September 20th,1867, he married Sarah Higgins, who still survives him. They lived at Unioaville five years then moving to Brown ing, Missouri, staying three years, when they returned to Unionville for three years more, when in the year 1898, moved to Kansas, and on April 1st, 1899, they started for Ore gon, overland, and were four months on the road, arriving at Adams, Eastern Oregon, in Au gust o f the same year. . After A residence here o f three years, they r e m o v e d to Newberg, Mr. Adams was not only a soldier for his coqntry; but also for the cause of Christ, a t the time o f his death being a member of the local Christian church. His wife and tw o brothers survive him, and many friends mourn his depart ure, but not as those that have no hope. Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Geo. C. Ritchey, at the W. W. Hollings w orth Undertaking Parlors, on M onday, January 2nd, 1911; attended by the local G. A. R. Post and many friends o f the family. The interment was made Tuesday, the burial service being conducted by the pastor and the officers o f the Post.
