I was given every op portunity to drink, and I did drink—some. As I got older and mixed with men, war-scarred veterans who fought with my father would come up, and, for the sake of old times, ask me to celebrate with them the glory o f past events, and I did—some. “ Then when I was minister to Austria the customs ot the coun- try and my official position almost compelled me to drink always. I tried to drink with extreme moderation, because I knew that alcohol is the worst poison a man could take into his system; but I found out it was an impossibility to drink mod erately. “ I could not say, when drink was placed before me; ‘ No, I only drink in the morning,’ or at certain hours. The fact that I indulged at all compelled me to drink on every occasion or be absurd. “ For that reason, -because moderate drinking is a practical impossibility, I became an ab solute teetotaler—a crank, if you please. I will not even allow it in my house. When a man can say, ‘ I never drink’ he never has to drink, is never urged to drink, never offends by not drinking; at least that is my experience. “ Give me the sober man, the absolute teetotaler every time. He’s dependable. If I had the greatest appointive powers in the country, no man would get even the smallest appointment from me unless "he showed proof o f his absolute teetotalism. “ If I could, by offering mv body a sacrifice, free this coun try from this fell cancer, the de mon drink, I’d thank the Al mighty for the privilege o f doing, it.” —The Amethyst. TIT-BITS Several evenings ago a young man repaired to a telephone office and rang up his sweetheart a t her residence. “ Is that you?” “ Yes, George, dear,” came the reply. “ Are you alone?” “ Yes, darling.” “ I wish I was there.” “ I wish so, to o .” “ If I were there do you know what I would do with my darl- “ No, George; I do not.” And then somehow the lines got mixed, and this is what she heard: “ Well, I’d pull her ears back till she opened her mouth, and then I’d put a lump o f mud in it. It that didn't answer I’d give her a sound thrashing.” And then Marion tainted. Now they never speak as they pass by, and the man who was talking to his farrier about a balky mare says that anybody who will advise a man to put his arms round the neck o f an obstreperous horse and whisper words ot love in its ear ought to be hanged.
