Th# Danger to Haalth That Lurks In Thia Bad Habit. Even’ now and then when a laud able effort is made to dress our dip lomatic corps in something more befitting their dignity on ceremonial occasions than the funereal spike- tail or waiter costume in which they are now garbed a cry is raised /by some o f our representatives in congress that such a change is unde sirable, and the old story o f the way Franklin appeared at the court of Louis X V I. o f France is brought out again for an airing, and it is urged that our diplomats should follow his example. Franklin, it will be remembered, appeared among other foreign am bassadors and the uniformed gen erals and admirals at court in a plain suit, such as he was accus tomed to travel in. The French, ever eager for novelty, hailed the innovation with momentary enthu siasm and supposed it was the cos tume o f an ambassador from a poor and struggling nation. As a matter o f fact, Franklin had no intention o f wearing the suit in which he appeared, and until he found out its effect he probably had an uncomfortable time o f it, fo r he was a man with an acute sense o f the fitness o f things. Some time before he had ordered a handsome court suit and expected to make as fine an appearance as any other fo r eign ambassador. But the tailor from whom he had ordered the suit did not get it finished in time, and Franklin had to go in the only suit he had ready. He continued to wear it after his court suit was done, as he saw he had made an un intentional hit, When h'e was in England he wore a handsome court dress o f velvet embroidered with gold.— Christian Herald. 1 V 1 1 ........ . For some unexplained causes ha bitual mouth breathing is frequent among civilized races o f all ages. It is very common among children. It attracts very little attention, and je t it does not occur at all among the lower animals. One wonders if much comment would be made if •very second or third animal seen on the street had its mouth open. Any one who suffers from nasal obstruction must obviously breathe through the mouth, and the mucous membrane o f the mouth must nec essarily do its best to perform the functions o f the nasal mucous mem brane. For this it is but poorly adapted and suffers accordingly. Every one knows the dry mouth which results from a common “ cold in the head.” especially daring sleep. Children woo are habitual mouth breathers are subject to af fections o f the throat like tonsilitis, to certain affections o f the larynx and also to diseases o f the lungs. The tissues o f the throat o f a child are in a state o f growth and transition and are very amenable to adverse conditions. There is no doubt, according to the London Lancet, that this is one o f the ways in which chronic enlargement of the tonsils is produced. Young children are apt in spite o f some degree o f nasal o be traction to per sist in attempting to maintain nasal respiration during sleep. It fol lows in such cases that the air en try is inadequate, the lungs do not expand properly, and the founda tions o f chest deformities, such as “ pigeon breast,” are laid. Sooner or later the habit o f mouth breathing is acquired and once acquired is not easily unlearn ed, even though an original cause such as adenoids be removed or, as happens in the course o f time, dis appears spontaneously. . - When a child has worn a tra cheotomy tube— e. g., fo r diph theria— for any length o f tune there is sometimes considerable dif ficulty in dispensing with the tube, even though the obstruction is quite removed. Such a child has apparently lost the proper use o f the vocal cords. I f a simple mouth breather be directed to close the mouth and take a deep breath through the nose it is not at all un common to see the nostrils immedi ately collapse, and this in spite o f the fact that they are under the control o f the will and normally should readily stay distended. Sailor»’ Trousers. Sailors’ trousers are probably the strangest that are to be found in use by any class o f men in the world. The gradual increase in size between the knee and the ankle pro duces a strange flaring out effect that seems inexplicable, yet therF is a very good reason for the appar ently superfluous cloth that flaps about the shoe at every step. In the old days when many har bors were unapproachable by large vessels goods had to be transferred in Bmall boats driven shoreward by the sturdy arms o f the ship’s crew. T he beaches upon which they land ed were often shallow, and it be came necessary for the sailors to step out into the water and drag the boats up on the shore. Their trousers became very wet indeed as a result. Close fitting trousers, aft er drying, were apt to shrink and impede the free movements o f the wearer. Moreover, in their wet state they clung to the limbs in a very clammy and disagreeable fash ion. But wide bottomed trousers can very easily be rolled up above the knee; hence the sailors’ trousers as we know them today.— Harper’s Weekly. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ' Lycurgus. Lycurgus, the legislator o f Spar ta, flourished about 898 B. C. On the death o f his brother Polydectes, Lycurgus Tesolved to hold the sov ereignty in trust in case the widow should be delivered o f a son, which, proving to be the fact, the faithful guardian carefully administered the government till his nephew became o f age. A fter this he traveled to study the laws o f other countries, and on his return he established that system which distinguished Sparta from every state in the world. Having bound the people to observe this institution, he left Lacedaemon and is supposed to have died in Crete. Piit Hla Foot In It. K IE N L E & SO N S, Newberg, Oregon C. B. The barkeeper in a Harlem beer saloon resigned the place, with all its rights, privileges, prerogatives and emoluments, because he would not change his name. The propri etor’s wife went to Europe a few mouths ago and brought back with her, besides souvenirs o f the father- land, a dachshund, which soon be came a pet in the saloon. The dog answered to the name o f Fritz, and unfortunately that was also the name o f the barkeeper. “ A cus tomer he say, ‘Fritz,’ and I say, *Yes, w ot?’ And all make a langh and say, *We mean the other dog.* If they call the dog Hans I stay, but to be for always the other dog, no,” and there is a void now where the “ other Fritz” used to minister to the Teutonic thirst.— New York Tribune. ________________ Good M anner Ruls. If you are puzzled about a ques tion o f etiquette and have not time to consult an older or more experi enced friend or relative apply the Golden Rule— to do as you would be done by— for this will almost always bring yoU out of your diffi culty with flying colors. The ex pression “ a nature’s gentleman” is often applied to some simple mind ed and unsophisticated man who is thus guided, for, whether one be gentle or simple, the truest “ good breeding” is shown by care for the feelings o f others.— Exchange.
