The “ Is it hot enough for y ou ’ fiend is again at large. A lone Oregon editor w ho is zealously fighting prohibition fear Oregon said last week that he thinks the proper thing to d o is to purity the saloons! And his Satanic M ajesty is still chuckling. Sometimes we are inclined t o doubt the personality o f the Devil, but when we think how some silly and scandalous stosiee get into circulation, even in so good a tow n as Newberg, our doubts are immediately set at rest. Editor M artin o f the Telephone- Register, with tears dripping from his pen, writes to the Re publicans o f Yamhill about “ the hand w riting on the w all.” In this case however it is a plain case o f Daniel doing the shiver ing at the knees. The lions’ll git you, ef you don’t watch out! The Saler^-Journal boastfu lly refers to. the great number o f sales o f bottled beer made by the Salem brewery for shipment into the dry counties of the state. The information is timely and the Journal will have ample time to see how those same dry coun ties . will go at it to close that source o f supply, says the Amity Standard. Oregon dry in 1910. £ The Graphic regrets very much to note the bill boards which are being put up over tow n. New berg is a progressive little d ty and we have all been exerting ourselves to make it clean and attractive. The glaring trill board nuisance is decidedly a step in the opposite direction and we don’t believe property owners can afford to sell the use o f their premises for such a purpose. The people o f Newberg have done nobly in their support of Pacific College and have clearly manifested their interest in the institution. But there are other ways than financial in which that interest and support should be continued. By taking a little pains and thought the people of this vicinity can materially in crease the attendance o f the col lege. Be free to speak a good word for our home institution and mention the substantial im provements which are just ahead. If you know o f any young people here or elsewhere who might be interested in higher education, give the names to some one con nected with the college, prefer ably to Prof. Reagan, acting president. By such co-operation you will do a favor to the young people, to Pacific College and at the same time will be benefitting Newberg. Change e f Express Rates for New berg. The Graphic is in receipt of a communication from the Rail road Commission o f Oregon an nouncing the cut which it has just made in express rates in the state. An idea o f the extent o f the cut and what it means to Newberg can be had from the fol low ing figures, which show the old and the new rate between Newberg and the points men tioned. The last section “ Of a Finger of the Moon Reddened by the Setting Sun” in the Sanskrit work called the “ Surging of the Ocean of Time1 contains a legend concerning wo man’s creation which ia common! credited throughout India ani which runs somewhat as follows: At the beginning o f time Twaahtri, lean of Hindoo mythology, the Vulcan created the world. But when he wished to create a woman he found he had employed all his material in the creation of man. There di not remain one solid element. Then Twaahtri, perplexed, fell into a pro found meditation. He roused him ■elf to do as follows: He took the lightness of the leaf and the glance ox the fawn, the gayety of the sun’a rays and tears of the mist, the., in constancy of the wind and the ti midity of the hare, the vanity of the peacock and the softness of the down on the throat of the swallow, the harshness of the diamond, the sweet flavor of honey, the cruelty of the tiger, the warmth of fire, the chill of snow, the chatter of the jay and the cooing of the turtle dove. He melted all these and form ed a woman. Then he made a pres ent of her to man. Eight days later the man came to Twaahtri and said “ My lord, the creature you gave me poisons my existence. She ¿nat ters without rest, she takes all my time, she laments for nothing at all and is always ill.” And Twaahtri received the woman again. But eight days later the man came again to the god and said: “ My lord, my life ia very solitary since I returned this creature, remember ahe danced before my singing. I recall how she glanced at me from the corner of her eye, that she played with me, clung to me.” And Twashtri returned the woman to him. Three days only passed, and Twashtri saw the man coming to him HR| “ My lord,” said he, “ I do not un derstand exactly how, hut I’m sure the woman causes me more annoy ance than pleasure. I beg of you relieve me of her.” But Twashtri cried, “ Go your way and do your best!” And the man cried, “ I cannot live qjth her!” “ Neither can you live without her,” replied Twashtri. And the man went sorrowf ul! away, murmuring: “ Woe is me. can neither live with her nor with out her.” A Lake County Announcement From the appearance o f things, if alm ost daily buggy rides are any indications, besides three or four visits at the home between Resourceful Pussy. drives, there will be a wedding Short— I thought you were going in the near future. I gave chase so earnest ly that the thief finally dropped the clothes in the street and disappear ed. As 1 gathered up my belong ings a native policeman came along and insisted on arresting me. He took me before a Filipino judge, where I told my story very plainly and emphatically. When 1 had finished the judge said. “ You are dismissed, but you may leave the clothes- here.” “ But why?” I insisted agrily. "Because,” said he, with sage de liberation, “ how can I tell that you speak the truth? He contended, “ I hold this to be true even though the commentators dis agree with me, and again I say even though the commentators disagree with me.” At this point an old lady was seen to leave the church.
