ALBANY, N. Y., March 11.— At tha
coacluaion of a conference which,
with two or three 'interims, covered
practically the entire day. President
Taft seemed hopeful that a tariff war
with Canada may y«t be averted.
■ ~ The negotiations between the Presi
dent and W. S. Fielding, the Canadian
Minister o f Finance, did not result in
either agreement or disagreement
Many details remain to be worked out
and at this time it was declared that
the foreign official statement sums
up the situation: **The President and
Mr. Fielding were in conference on
the tariff today for several hours. No
conclusion was reached, but the situ
ation remains unchanged.”

Retirement From Reclamation Service
Directorate Considered Likely.
WASHINGTON. March 22.— Before
the end of the Pinchot-Balllnger row
is reached, F. H. Newell probably will
cease to be director o f the United
States Reclamation Service.
It has been intimated time and
again in these dispatches Coat Secre
tary Ballinger was desirous of re
lieving Mr. Newell of his present po
sition, and although the story was
persistently denied. Its correctness
was testified to before the Congres
sional Investigation committee by no
less man than A. P. Davis, chief en
gineer of the Reclamation Service.

Wn., March 22 —
When the case o f William .Gohl, te n n
er agent o f the Sailors’ Union here, i the Speaker’s daring challenge and
who is accused o f the murder qf
Charles Hadberg and suspected o f
complicity in other crimes, is called
in the Chehalis County Superior
Court at Montes&no May 2,
which promises to surpass any simi
lar hearing In this state, if not the
country, will commence.
On a signed application from the
prisoner the trial was ordered con
tinued from March 25 to May 2. Oohl’s
application for delay stated that the
defense was not yet ready to proceed
with the trial.
In all o f the rare statements Gobi
has made' sine* his arrest he has de
clared his innocence emphatically. A
report is current that the Sailors’
Union haa raised $5,000 to defend
their former agent, William Gohl, who
la now in Jail at Montesano on a
charge of murder in the first degree.

few exceptions, rallied with almost
unbroken party front and, by the cu r

defeated the involution by Burleson

Representatives from Oregon, Wash

stood staunchly by the regular Re

occasion voted against combination
of Democrats and Insurgents.

Congress Accomplishes Little.
Although Congress has been in ses

nothing has been accomplished In the

so far as the records show, .not one
single recommendation of the Presi

branch of the Government The Sen

the House of Representatives has yet
to pass, or even consider, the first
