visor o f grasing o f th« national forest
service, has returned from a six weeks’
trip o f inspection o f the grazing lands
in the Deschutes country, He found
the grasing lands in not as goad con
dition as has been the case in other
sections o f the state, and ifi ail prob
ability tho * umber o f cattle allowed
on the ranges will be materially les
sened before the opening o f the 1910
grazing season.
In aome sections- o f the mountains
the grass was practically gone,, while
it wns but seldom that real graaa was
encountered in sufficient quantities to
keep the oattle ever winter. Many
cattle owners in the. Bend country are
planning to feed considerably during
the winter. The coming o f the rail
road into the country hns so aroused
the farmers, however, that they do not
bother about n temporary setback.
While the eattle owners will proba
bly suffer, a temporary loss, owing to
the catting down e f then umber o f
eattle they are -allowed to graze on the
government forests, they will gain in
the end in that with a rest, partial
grass which, properly eared for, will
last for y e a n without another rest.
LHUe trouble is anticipated as the eat
tie owners have learned that the ac
tions o f the national forest servile are
fo r the best, and they make no effort
to reeist.
