AIRSHIP EXPLODES.
Speed Record Broken— Wright Ma-
chines do Best.
Bheims, Aug. 24.— The spectacle of
six aeroplanes simultaneously winging
their flight in huge eirelea near the
plain at Bethany here today marked the
opening of aviation week. A t the finish
there was a great bunt el-sheen over
this wonderful and impreeaive exhi
bition.
Intermittent showers and high winds
prevailed, and the eliminating trials for
the selection o f the French represents

next Saturday, were spoiled. Only Le
Febvre, with a Wright bi-plane, Blériot,
Esnault-Pelterie and Captain Forber
braved the gusty puffs. LeFebvre alone
succeeded in negotiating the complete
circuit o f the course. He remained in
the air for 16 minutes in a 25-mile
wind, breaking the speed record hereto
fore held by Tissandier, covering 10
kilometers ia 8 minutes 55 4-5 seconds.
O f the others entered in the trials,
Blériot was only able to cover a suf
ficient distance to qualify.
Shortly before dark the rain suddenly
ceased and the wind fell to a dead
calm. The sky pilots soon were busy in
getting their machines ' out. Latham
was first sway, ascending high from
the start. He passed the cheering tri
bunes at the height of 150 feet. Lam
bert, Sommer, Cockburn, De la Grange
and Fournier followed in quick suc
cession, and as Latham was complet
ing the first round, now at a height
of 300 feet, six aeroplanes, like sea
gulls, were hovering over the field.
Fournier was first down, falling head-
oa into a haystack as Lambert swept
around into the second lap, his machine
seeming to cut a brilliant rainbow.
Meanwhile LeFebvre started afresh
and was followed by LaBlanc, Bunau-
Varilla, Tissandier, Forber, Blériot and
Paulham, until the entire air seemed
filled with mammoth birds
Latham came down after finishing
the second round,'the others gradually
dropping out until only three Wright
machines remained afloat. Lambert
made four and LeFebvre and Tissandier
three circuits each.
LeFebvre concluded with a thrilling
demonstration o f the maneuvering ca
pacity o f his machine, circling around
the starting point, cutting several fig
ure eights and swooping down over the
people in front o f the tribunes, Lam
bert finishing at the same time.
During this exhibition Lambert and
LeFebvre passed each other twice and
gave other evidences o f control over
their machines. The Wright aeroplanes
alone completed the required three
rounds.

Wallmen Made Good 8tart, but Acci
dents Bring Failure.
Camp Wellman, Spitzenbergen, Aug.
15 (via Hammerfest, Aug. 28).— Walter
Wellman’s second attempt to sail over
the North Pole in a balloon has resulted
in s failure. The giant dirigible bal
loon “ America,” in which Mr. W ell
man and his party of three set out,
proceeded about 32 miles from the
stw ting point, when disaster overtook
it.
A fter a long preparation and wait
ing for favorable weather, the oppor
tunity came today, and Mr. Wellman
decided to make the start. I t was 10
o ’clock in the morning when the great
airship was brought out o f its shed and
the daring explorers took their plaees
in the car.
When the anchors were cast loose,
the airship ascended beautifully, the en'
ginee were set in motion and everything
seemed to work to perfection. The big
air craft was manuvered for some time
and answered the helm perfectly.
Then its head was turned northward,
and it set ont at a speed o f 25 miles an
hour. Suddenly, after having covered
32 miles, and when everything seemed
to be going splendidly, the leather.guide
rope, to whieh was attached 1000
pounds o f provisions and stores, broke
away. The accident occurred just as
the airship was nearing the pack ice o f
North Spitzenbergen.
Released from this gTest weight, the
airship shot upwards at a terrific pace,
until it was a great height above the
clouds. The pilots succeeded, however,
in bringing her down near the earth,
turning her about and set ont to fight
their way southward against a strong
wind.
The airship proceeded slowly south
ward to the edge o f the pack ice, where
the steamer Fram was anchored. A fter
much difficulty, a tow rope was gotten
aboard the Fram, whieh started imme
diately to tow the airship to Spitsen-
bergen.
The strain was so great, however,
that it threatened to tear the car to
whieh the rope was attached to pieces,
and Mr. Wellman finally decided to
bring the airship down to the surface
o f the water. This was effected with
out mishap and the car rested on the
surface o f the water until all the mem
bers o f the crew, the dogs and the sei
entific instruments eould be transferred
aboard the Fram.
The America was then towed baek to
the landing stage, and within a short
distance o f where the start was made.
Bnt the ill-luck o f the expedition was
not yet at an end.. Just as the airship
had reached the landing stage and ev
erything looked favorable for its rescue
without serious damage, a sudden gust
o f wind caught the big bag broadside
on, and snatched it away from its tow
lines.
I t was carried careening over rongh
ice hummocks for some distance and
then it exploded. A ll the scattered
parts o f the airship were subsequently
recovered, bnt the damage was so great
as to preclude any further attempt to
fly over the pole this year.

department of the University o f Ore
gon has just closed with an enrollment
of more then 860 students. This is a
materiel increase over tbe number en
rolled last year, and there ia hardly a
county o f the state not represented
among tbe students.
In all respecta the resulta o f the work
of the past year have been most satis
factory, and the plans for the coming
year include expansion in all depart
ments.
Dr. Herman Burr Leonard, o f the de
partment o f mathematics, who has had
a number o f years’ connection with cor
respondence schools in the East, and
who has been very successful in his cor
respondence courses in mathematics at
the university during tbe past two
years, has been put in general charge
o f ail correspondence work.

be assisted in the office work by M n s
M u e lle Hair, formerly an instrutor in
the department o f English literature,
and the work in tbe field w ill be in
charge o f Profeasor L . R. Alderman.
Plans for the coming year include sev
eral courses each in tbe departments of
mathematics, English literature, Eng
lish composition, botany, history, edu
cation, economics, mechanical drawing
and physics, and an enrollment o f 600
students ia expected. The correspond
ence study work will begin in Septem
ber.

he w ill realise a net profit o f $4,800 on
the vetch seed alone, to say nothing ol'
tbe vetch hay he baled.
In addition to his 140 acres in vetch,
Armstrong h u 200 acres in spring oats,
which is in splendid condition and wil
doubtless return a big yield and give
him an additional profit of several hun
dred dollars for the p u t y e w ’s work.

road had a hearing before the railroad
commission here. Commissioners Aitch-
eson and Campbell were present to take
testimony. A general complaint o f ex
cessive freight chargee had been filed.

21.— Another cloud
burst at Four-mile creek, near Canon
City, last night made more disastrous

since dawn yesterday threatened the
adjoining towns, washed out railroad
tracks and tied op many tourist trains.
The cloudburst was one o f the heaviest
in that section and soon the river,
swollen by mountain torrents near
Canon City, had risen eight feet six
inches.

three days past there hare been indica
tions o f an eruption o f some kind near

Yesterday a new geyser broke out in
full force about 100 foot north o f the
regular Fountain geyser, near the ho
tel. Today this now geyser, which
does not appear to affect any o f the
otiters in tbe vicinity, played to a
height o f 160 to 200 feeL throwing
immense quantities o f hot water and
■team.
The new geyser does not play regu
larly, as does "O ld Faithful,” but at
short intervals, eruptions occurring
five or six hours apart and lasting
about one hour.

“ The only way in which I can be
come a candidate is by petition signed
by a certain number o f voters who did
not vote at tbe primary election, re
questing that my name be placed on the
ballot as an independent candidate,”
says Mr. Heney.
Mr. Heney has been nominated both
by the Democrats and the Independence
League, but California’s new primary
law forbids that a candidate accept
nomination by two parties. Further
more, a candidate must be named by
the party with whom he announced his
affiliation at the primaries Mr. Heney
is registered as a Republican.
Mr. Heney says he does not want the
office o f prosecuting attorney, but will,
i f nominated and elected, sacrifice his
business interests for the public weal
in order to continue the war against
the grafters.
