Every indication is that men and

Either a sodden decision to contest
with Harriman fo r the traffic o f O m p

o f knowledge that the Oregon Trunk
would be down and oat very soon unless
it began construction ia bejieved to be
the cause o f the rushing o f men into
the Deschutes country.
Either alternative raises conjecture
aa to whether Porter Bros, are playing
a hold-up game on Harriman or are
backed by James J. H ill or actually in
tend to build a railroad themselves.

French Aeronaut Makes the 22 Miles
in 28 Minutes.
Dover, July 26.— Louis Blériot, the
French aviator, accomplished the re
markable feat o f flying across the Eng
lish channel Satnrday in 28 minutes.
The distance from his starting point,
near Calais, to Dover, is about 22
miles, and be therefore traveled a t the
rate o f nearly a mile a minute.

M. Blériot looked little the worse fo r
his hazardous trip, although his foot
was burned by petrol. Thia gava him
some trouble, and ha had to be assisted
to on automobile which was waiting.
He drove to the Lord Warden hospital,
where be was greeted enthusiastically.
A French torpedo boat destroyer
followed the aeroplane, but so s w ift
was the speed o f the machine that the
destroyer was soon la ft fa r behind.
Although the start was made in calm
weather, the wind soon rose and a
strong breeze was blowing at the time
o f the descent, making the perform
ance all the more noteworthy.
The French torpedo boat destroyer
arrived at Dover at 6 :50 with Bleriot’a

Tribesmen Put Up Desperate Fight
Against Trained Soldiers.
Malaga, Spain, July 26.— The steam
er Menorquin, with 80 wounded aboard,
arrived here today from Mellila, where
the hospitals ore overcrowded.
Pas
sengers on tbs steamer declare that the
residents o f Melilla are panic-stricken,
the successes o f the Moors givin g rise
to the belief that they w ill swoop down
on the city itself. Friday’s battle eras
sanguinary, there being much hand-to-
hand fighting.
The Moorish tribes now gathered
cloee to General Marina’s camp are es
timated at 16,000. Their recent losses
are said to have been nearly 1,000.
The Spanish forces lost n it less than
3,000 men.
When the battle became general, the
Spaniards endeavored to trap the Moors
between two lines o f fire. The tribes
men, however, were too wary and
fought desperately.
They retreated
only when they were literally hurled
back at the points o f Spanish bayonet.
A t dusk there was a lull in the fighting.
Victory fo r Americans.
Pakin, July 21.— On account o f the
failure o f the negotaitions at the re
cent meeting o f bankers in London
and Paris, an attempt ia being made at
Pekin to close quickly the Hankow
railway loan by increasing the amount
ao as to give Americans equal partici
pation and not reduce the original allot
ments to the other three powers— Great
Britain, France and Germany. This
arrangement was agreed to by the
Chinese foreign board Saturday and
the four days’ negotiations ended with
the consultations o f foreign bankers.
Export Argentina Wheat.
Buenos Ayres, July 21.— During the
first five months o f this year the ex
