case. He did not answer defi
nitely, but we assume that he
and his partner are men who can
be reasoned with, and here is an
■ opportunity for work on the part
o f all who want to sustain the
good name of Newberg.
It is wonderful what concerted
action will do when it is made in
overwhelming numbers. In fact
few men are able to stand np
against it. no difference what
their position may be, when the
people assert themselves in no
uncertain terms a n d ¡ w i t h
strength of numbers that carries
weight.
We all know that conditions
have been gradually grow ing
worse in Newberg for several
months and unless we arouse
and assert ourselves the élément
that stands for an open town
w ill gain courage on account o f
the lax hand we are showing,
and soon we will have little
grounds for calling attention to
our advantages from the stand
point o f a good home town, free
from all the baser influences that
are so common in other places.
The Graphic is willing to be
■classed as radical along these
lines. We have fought tor the
good name o f Newberg too long
to be ready to submit a t this day
and witness the introduction o f
such things As will be the enter-
, ing wedge for others that will be
worse still, without a protest or
without calling on the people to
ge t together and make them
selves felt while the opportunity
is afforded for curtailing these
evil influences. We have never
stood for mob law or for taking
any other unlawful measures in
dealing with men who undertake
to defame the good name our
town has built up, but rather
have encouraged the better ele
ment to arise and make them
selves felt where occasion has de-
< raanded it. A crisis is at hand
and a turning point may be
looked for. Conditions in New
berg must be improved at an
early day or we will soon see the
time when they will be worse.
Which shall it be?
