Sam McVey and Bert Turnbow
met w ith a very serious accident
a t the bridge over Chehalem
Creek on the Dayton road last
Sunday morning, and they were
fortunate in escaping with their
lives. They started to cross the
bridge from the sooth with the
Henry Hagey traction engine
and when they were over the
mill race the bridge gave way
and engine and both men fell
twenty-five feet, landing a t the
bottom of the race.
Sam jumped when he saw they
were going down and went into
w ater up to his neck, while Turn-
bow was caught by the heel of
one shoe and went down with
the engine. Neither of them were
badly hurt by the fall but both
received some burns from escap
ing steam. Sam is pretty severe
ly burned on one leg and the
wound is liable to give him a
good deal of trouble.
About forty feet of the bridge
went down and travel th a t way
has been entirely suspended. The
engine don’t appear to be badly
wrecked, considering the distance
it fell. Mills and Ames are a t
work with a force of men endeav
oring to raise it.
It is said the law was complied
with by laying plank on the
bridge in front of the engine, but
it proved to be too weak to
stand the heavy strain.
