EVENTS OFTHE DAY
Governm ent May Have to Proclaim
Martial Law.
St. P etersburg, Sept. St.—St. P e t
ersburg is in the deadly grasp of
Asiatic cholera, which already hps ex
ceeded in severity and num ber of
deaths the visitation of 1893. T he
disease is increasing daily at an alarm
ing rate, and unless the authorities
show in the future a much greater
degree pf ability to cope w ith the
situation than they have in the /past,
there is every reason to fear th at it
will get out of hand. T he govern
m ent's th reat to apply the provisions
of m artial law has driven the munici
pal officials to bend all their energies
to clearing' the city of the scourge.
T he alderm anic council Saturday
voted $850,000 to enlarge the hospital
space, to purchase and distribute dis
infectants, the supply of which in St.
P etersburg is well nigh exhausted,
and to expedite the interm ent of
bodies, which has been notoriously
slow. T he deadhouses are over
crowded and many corpses lie un
buried.
U nder his authority, the prefect of
St. P etersburg, General Dracheffcky.
on Saturday prohibited the sale of
liquor throughout the city, including
the governm ent vodka shops, until
Septem ber 22, and he has further o r
dered that hereafter the sale of the
liquor shall be suspended at 2 P. M.
on Saturday until 1 A. M. Monday.
This action has been taken in order
to diminish alcoholic excesses, which
vefy m aterially increase the liability
to cholera infection arid the general
spread of the disease.
