    NEWBERQ GRAPHIC
TAKEN TO O SERIOUSLY.
Last week the Graphic pub
lished an artkle taken from the
Kansas City Star giving some o f
the pleas put up by old soldiers
in making application for pen
sions, whkh it seems some of the
old veterans about tow n have
taken very much to heart.
The funny ride o f the matter
was alone seen by the editor o f
the Graphic in reading the article
and it was not published with
any thought o f casting any re
flections on the old soldier. We
have never been inclined t o pub
lish these things, but since there
has been an attempt on the part
o f some to muke it appear that
we are against the old vets, will
say that at the breaking out of
the war, a brother, the only
member o f our family o f proper
age for enlistment, entered the
service, served out his time, re
enlisted and tow ard the close of
the second term o f service spent
w hat was known as the “ cold
New Year” at Cumberland Gap,
alm ost perishing from cold and
starvation and in the spring fol
low ing, when on the march north
with prisoners gave out and died
at the roadside. A cousin o f the
writer in the battle o f Missionary
Ridge had both legs cut o ff by a
cannon ball, and w hik bleeding
to death, urged his sorrowing
comrades to kave him, as he
could only die, and seek cover
for themselves from the rain of
frying bulkts.
An unck saw hard service at
^Pittsburg Landing and other
hard fought but disastrous bat
tles during the early part of the
w ar, was later discharged for
disabilities and went to an un
timely grave as a result o f the
exposures o f the service. An
other unde as a member o f Gen
eral Benjamin Harrison’s regi
ment, marched with Sherman to
the sea and still lives, though
past seventy years o f age and is
a constant sufferer from a dis
ease that comes as a result o f
what he went through.
The story might be continued
but this is probably enough to
show that for one who was too
young tor the service himself, the
record is probably at least as
good as some others w ho do
more talking. Some o f these
things are sad to think o f to this
day and yet there is a funny ride
to the story that we can see no
harm in enjoying.
We have always gladly assist
ed the old fellows, whenever pos-
ribk to do so, in their efforts to
obtain pensions from the govern
ment and shall continnue to do
so, but when there is an out-
croping of excntricities they must
allow us to smile.
In closing, and in contradis
tinction to the instances in the
artick complained o f we will here
note that an old Indiana friend
o f ours w ho saw hard service in
the army, some years ago when
disease came on, applied tor and
was granted a pension. At the
expiration o f a term of years he
entirely recovered, and being an
exceedingly conscientious man he
w rote the pension office that the
grounds on which his pension
w as granted had been removed
by his recovery, and asked to
have his name stricken from the
roll, which was done. Of course
brook on Saturday. M ay 12, for
the purpose o f deciding on a plan
tor financing a proposition for
making permanent improve
ments on the roads in thedis-
triet. This is certainly a step in
the right direction and the meet
ing should be well attended.
The crying need of the whole val<
ley is for better roads and it is a
question that must be worked
out by the people.
