Miss Bell Newhouse left last Friday morning tor Eugene where she will visit for three weeks with her uncle H. A. C ox and family. Mrs. L. H. Shirley entertained a com pany o f friends on the even ing o f October 31, in h on or o f Mr. Shirley’s birthday anniver sary. Mrs. M ary Lewis arrived from the East Wednesday and is vis iting with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Levi Lewis and other friends. Mr. and Mrs. M atthew Terrell will visit in Portland w ith rela tives and friends the last o f the week and attend quarterly meet ing. Mrs. M arion George went dow n t o Portland M onday morning to assist in caring for her son Albery, w h o is quite sick with nervous prostration. There will be a special meeting o f the Library Association Tues day evening, November 12, at 7:30 in the assembly room of the public school at which Miss M ar vin, of the State Library C om mission, will be present t o talk on library matters. Everyone w h o is interested in a public li brary for Newberg is especially requested to be present. C. F. Butler and daughter, Miss Grace, were called t o P ort land last Friday occasioned by the serious illness o f the former's daughter, Miss Maude, who has been quite sick w ith pneumonia. A card received Wednesday states that she is considerably, im proved, and a speedy recovery is hoped for. Tuesday night H. A. Grate’s mill w as broken into and the safe blow n open. No money was secured as nothing but books and papers w as left in the sale, and the outside d oor w as n ot locked. Strong suspicion is held as the tools left were all branded “ S. P. C o .” No one w ould have thought the present “ money flurry” w ould have caused these people t o take such hasty action, but unless they can give an ac count o f their whereabouts on the above named night the evi dence seems very strong? No arrests have been made. A com pany from the Friends church, both old and yonng, met a t the home o f Jesse Edwards Tuesday evening t o organize a class for the study o f church his tory. Mrs. Elliott and Mrs. Ed wards gave a brief outline o f the plans which they as a committee appointed for that purpose had in mind. This elicited many helpful suggestions from the com pany present. Dr. M orrison was chosen president and Myrtle Ganse secretary. The committee presented some books which they had procured for the investiga tion o f the class and a few were ordered at once. A t the request o f Mrs. Edwards Mrs. Elliott read a very interesting and in structive artical on “ Quakers as makers of America” written by a Presbyterian minister. There w as much interest manifested and we hope many more will avail themselves of the oppor tunity. The class meetings will be open t o all w h o would he in terested in such study whether members or not. The advance in price of feed and wages compels us to raise the price of milk.
