The advance o f Oregon and the
Pacific Northwest in lire stock
will be splendidly illustrated at
the Horse Show in Portland on
the 7th, 8th and 9th o f this
month. Entries have already
surpassed expectations and a
large attendance is anticipated.
In speaking o f the financial crisis
President Roosevelt says: “ I
donbt if my policies have had
any material effect in bringing
about the present trouble in Wall
Street, but if they have it will
not alter my policy in the least.
All I did was to turn on the
light, and I am not responsible
for what the light showed.”

This little hesitationjin the stream
of financial wealth, when Oregon
is producing for the good year
1907 a lumber product of $30,-
000,000, live stock and w ool
worth $20,000,000, poultry and
eggs worth $3,000,000, a grain
crop worth $15,000,000, and a
fruit crop ot£ $5,000,000, and
erecting buildings worth $20,-
000,000, seems just a little queer,
and things will right themselves.
Oregon banks have plenty o f
money, our people are out ot
debt, our mortgages are paid
and a little cool judgement and
optimism will bring us out al
right.
The Myrtle^Point Enterprise,
in speaking of law enforcement
in Portland ,£drops this timely
remark: “ On a recent date it
was announced in bold headlines
in a Portland paper that one of
the prominent peace officers o:‘
that city would visit a certain
resort to learn whether or not
the laws were being violated
The succeeding issue stated that
the judge hadjmade the visit anc
found everything all correct anc
very orderly. The official might
make even more certain the next
time by not only announcing his
purpose in the papers bat by
taking a brass band along and
sending in his card so as not
to make too sudden at appear
ance in the presence o f the dive
keeper.”

A great deal ot interest is being
manifested in the Oregon State
Good Roads convention to be
held in Portland November 14th-
15th. Hon. John H„ Sto t t o f
Salem, president o f the state as
sociation, urges the appointment
o f delegates and asks for a large
attendance. There will be pres
ent a number o f able speakers
who have [given years to practi
cal road-building. The county
judges and county commissioners
ot Oregon are especially responsi
ble for the success o f this meeting $ 1000 .
and are urged to send delegates.
The same is true with regard to
commercial, industrial, agricul
tural and horticultural societies,
reporting a list o f same at once
to President Scott, at Salem.
The dinner in honor ot Mr. M.
J. Roche, recently elected presi
dent o f the American association
o f Travelling Passenger Agents,
at the Portland Commercial Club
Saturday night, was attended
by the officials o f over twenty of
the leading American railroads,
the officials o f the Alaska-Yukon-
Pacific exposition, and the gov
ernors of Oregon and Washing
ton. Mr. Roche has attended
for years, the national conven
