C H A P T E R I.
The good people of Devonshire were
(ether given to quarreling—sometime*
about the minister’s w ife, meek, gentle
Mrs. Tiverton, whose manner of house
keeping, or style o f dress, did not exact
ly suit them; sometimes about the min
ister himself, good, patient Mr. T iver
ton, who vainly iaugined that if be
preached three sermons n weak, attend
ed the Wednesday evening prayer meet
ing, the Thursday evening sewing socie
ty, officiated at every funeral, visited all
the sick, and gave to every beggar who
oalled at his door, besides superintend
ing the Sunday school, he was earning
his salary of six hundred per year.
Sometimes, and that not rarely, the
quarrel crept into tbs choir, and then,
for one whole Sunday, It was all in vain
that Mr. Tiverton rend the psalm and
hymn, casting troubled glances toward
the vacant seats of his refractory singers.
There was no one to respond, unless it
were good old Mr. Hodges, who pitched
ss high that few could follow him ; while
Mrs. Captain Simpson— whose daughter,
tbs organist, had been snubbed at the
last choir meeting by Mr. Hodges’ daugh
ter, the alto singer— rolled up her eyes
at her next neighbor, or fanned herself
furiously in token o f her disgust.

a new cause o f quarrel, before whleb

bat when Mr. Tiverton, Squire Lamb
and Law yer Whlttemore, in the fu ll con
viction that they were doing right, re
fused a certificate o f scholarship to Laura
Tisdale, niece o f Mrs. Judge Tisdale,
and awarded R to one whose earnings in
a factory had procured for her a thor
ough English education, the villagers were
a t once get by the earn, the aristocracy
abusing, and the democracy upholding the
dismayed trio, who, ns the hreese blew
harder, quietly resigned their office, and
Devonshire was without a school com
mittee.
In this emergency something most he
done, and, aa the two belligerent parties
eeold only unite on a stranger, It seemed
n matter o f spscial providence that only
tw o months before young Dr. Holbrook
had rented the pleasant litti* office on the
village common, form erly occupied by old
D r. Carey, now lying in the graveyard
by the mid* o f some whose days he had
prolonged, and others whose days be bad
sorely shortened. Besides being hand
some, and skillful, and quite as fam iliar
with the poor as the rich, the young doc
tor was descended from the aristocratic
line o f Boston Holbrooks, facto which
tended to make him a favorite with both
classes; and, greatly to his surprise, he
found himself unanimously; elected to the
responsible office o f sole inspector of corn-
seen schools in Devonshire.
W ith no definite ides as to what was
expected o f him, except that he was to
find out “ whether n g irl knew her P’ s
and 0 ’s," and was also to “ cut- one or
tw o o f the first candidates," Dr. H ol
brook accepted the office, and then aw ait
ed rather nervously his initiation. He
was not easy in the society o f ladies, un
less, indaed, tbs lady stood in need of
his professional services, when he lost
sight o f her at once, sad thought only of
her disease. H is patient ones well, how
ever, he became nervously shy and em
barrassed, retreating as soon ss possible
from her presence to the covert of hia
friendly office, where, with his boots upon
the table and his head thrown back in a
most comfortable position, he sat one

boy," passing to his master a little three-

Following the direction indicated, the
doctor saw, drawn up near his door, an
old-fashioned
one-horse,
square-boxed,
dark green wagon, drawn by a sorrel
horse, sometimes called by the genuine
Yankee “ yellow,” and driven by a white-
haired man o f a pleasing, patriarchal
appearance, which interested the doctor
far more than did the flutter o f the blue
ribbon beside him, even though the bon
net that ribbon tied shaded the face of
n young girl. The note was from her,
and, tearing it open, the doctor read, in
the prettiest o f all pretty, girlish hand
w riting :
