It such was not the case what w ould become of the lawyers. ■ Naw System C — f 1~lud George Lea completed his con tra ct with the city for patting in the new water system and left tor his home at C ottage Grove the first o f the week, bat he will return in about ten days and re pair the reservoir on the old sys tem that was built by Portland parties some three years ago, and which has never given satis faction on account o f a crack in the wall which causes a leak. On account o f unforeseen con tingencies that arose after he to o k the contract, which resulted in tedious and exasperating de lays, the work was not com pleted in the time he anticipated, and consequently the cost o f con st ruction piled up to such pro portions that he was unable to make any money out of the job . Pipe that should have reached Newberg from the factory at Olym pia, Washington, in tour or five days was delayed on the w ay by the railroads for weeks. Gravel tor the concrete work w as not furnished to him here as had been promised, and he finally had to build a barge and do his ow n transporting from up the river, all o f which piled up the expenses. Notwithstanding all these try ing circumstances under which he labored he stuck faithfully to thé jo b , showing no disposition t o slight the work ia tke least. In fact jn some instances he made the work better than the con tract called for and the system reflects much credit on Mr. Lea since it ia completed. Some fears were felt lest the w ood pipe would cause the water t o taste o f the w ood but all such fears hare been allayed, for no one can detect any difference in the taste o f the «jrater since the -new system was connected up w ith the old. The fact is the quality of the water is unsur passed and no one can tell from the taste of it thut it flows through w ood pipe. The pipe berg $200.
