Prosecution Chargee Conspiracy to
Rule by T e rro r.
Boise, Idaho, June 5.— Through
James H. Hawley, senior of the group
o f prosecutors, the State o f Idaho
today made the opening statement
against W illiam D. Haywood, whom
it charges with the murder o f Frank
Steunenberg, and then began the pre
sentation o f the testimony by which
it hopes to prove the indictment laid
against him. The opening statement
was a broad, sweeping arraignment o f
the leaders o f the W estern Federation
o f Miners, who w ere charged with
plotting wholesale murder and hiring
assassins, all in a gigantic conspiracy
o f vengeance upon those who ob
structed their sway, to destroy oppo
sition by terrorism, to control the po
litical destinies o f the commuqitiea
covered by their organization and to
perpetuate their own power within the
organization.
I t charged a widespread conspiracy
dating in inception from the N orth
Idaho disturbances 16 years ago,
reaching down to the murder o f Frank
Steanenberg, and whose murdered
victims by bullet and bomb numbered
scores. H aw ley declared that wher
ever in the mining sections o f the
Coast States the federation had been
in control there had been left a trait
o f blood to mark its operations. O f
the hired assaasins he cried:
“ T o them murder became a trad«
and assassination a means o f living."
