Chicago, May 10.— The recent action
of the Burlington in outtlng the rataa
on transcontinental mall to meet the
competition in service and tim e of the
Rock Island, Is having an important
bearing on the question of mail com
pensation generally.
I t is said that the voluntary reduc
tion made by the Burlington is being
seriously considered by the postmaster
general in determining whether the to
tal compensation received by the m il-
roads shall be reduced between $5,000,-
000 and $6,000,000 annually.
This fact became apparent, It is
stated, last Wednesday, when a com
mittee o f prominent railroad
men
called on tne postmaster general with
a petition asking him to rescind the
order requiring the total tonnage car
ried over a mail route for one week to
be divided by seven, instead of six, in
arriving at the average tonnage car
