The Rainier Register says: The suicide o f the tw o Colum bia county girls in Portland recently brings home to this community the fact that the ranks of the un­ derw orld in the great cities are being constantly recruited from the country. We believe it is true that the small tow ns contribute by far the greater percentage of these victims to their ow n folly and the lust o f men. O f course it is pitiful, but pity fo r the victim s should not obscure the fact th at they paid the penalty prescribed, anc d th a t th d on ly remedy is in a better home training and a more- thorough equipment for the bat­ tle o f life. The attractions of a city are manifold and alm ost ir- resist able t o the uneducated, thoughtless country girl. She is tired of the humdrum of the farm or the small village and her van­ ity leads her to think th a t her career w ill be one o f triumph. She has full confidence in her abil­ ity to secure g o o tf pay and light w ork, and when she finds th at she is only an insignificant atom , w ithout any qu ality to a ttra ct favorable consideration from those w ho could be o f service to her, she either allow s herself to float dow n the stream o f vice or “ takes up arms against a sea o f troubles and, by opposing, ends them.” O f course the male creature in the tragedy played the usual part. He had but one object from first t o last, and there seems to be no adequate unishment for him under the iw . though those w ho fo llo w his career t o the end w ill doubt­ less see retribution overtake him. The girls, or rather young w o ­ men, seem to have possessed qual­ ities th a t m ight have been the foundation o f strong characters and useful lives.. They loved Their parents and were over­ whelmed w ith shame a t the po­ sition in which they fonnd them­ selves. They were n ot o f the naturally depraved class o r they would not have chosen such a desperate road out o f their trou­ bles. Their fate w ill not serve as an example to deter others from the primrose path that leads to hell on earth, but it should act as a stimulant to parents to give more attention to both girls and boys, to keep close to them and to endeavor to instill in to their minds the hom ely truth that trancient jo y s may be t o o dearly purchased and th at every effort to lead an “ easy” life results dis- astrously.
