N E W B E R G GRAPHIC. M Meood-claa matter at the pò. tuffi ee at Newberg, Oregou. IS S U E D E V E R Y TH U RSD AY M O R N IN G B. H. WOODWARD. w . C. WOODWARD. $1.00 Per Year in Advance* THURSDAY, AUGUST 2. I t it surprising to note that the crop o f paper railroads in Oregon is steadily increasing. The liquor * forces are ready and willing to spend money, as w ell as to do a lot ot dirty work t o break down the strong tem perance sentiment that has long prevailed in Newberg. I t is a good time to line people up. Which side are you going to take in the fight? The keepers o f lo w dives are said to be moving out o f the dry counties and relocating in w et counties. No town can main tain a “ north end” district with out saloons. This doubling up ot the w orst elements o f society in the w et counties is liable to cause a turning o f the tide tw o years hence that w ill enlarge the dry district in Oregon by the ad dition o f several counties. Those who are inclined to think the Graphic is radical, touching the personal habits o f people, should read the following from the Oregonian: “ There ought to be no smokers’ seats in any street-car. No man has more right to smoke in a street-car than in a public hall, church or theater. Nor indeed should any one be permitted to smoke on the public street. Indeed, if a man w ill smoke, be should be obliged t o shut himself up in a water closet a t home. A Even that is hard on his wife or housekeeper. in the fight against gin shops too long to be frightened by the carpings o f the curbstone bri gade. The sentiments o f the Junction City Times as expressd in the follow ing lines have the right ring: “ I f a newspaper man knew how many knocks are received behind his back he would adopt another calling, remarked a citizen the other day. The citi zen is mistaken. The newspaper man w ho has the elements that make success to him expects to be maligned by every lawbreaker, swindler, hypocrite and carping critic who loves notority, and is ignored, and in fact, by all who do not agree w ith him on public and private matters. The news paper man who espects to go through life without being mis. represented and unjustly cen sured should make arrangements to die young.” The Graphic stands for law en forcement and is ready and w ill ing to devote space in the col umns o f the paper, and to spend time and money outside the of fice to see that the good name o f Newberg is maintained, but the Graphic docs not favor mob law. We are aware that the liquor business makes brutes o f men and that those who engage in the traffic have little regard for the rights o f the majority. These things make men’s blood boil at times and they suggest desperate means for ridding communities o f gallon houses and other re sorts, but it is better to keep cool and act in accordance with the law. The apathv o f well mean ing people is often exasperating underthese trying circumstances, so prone are we to want the other fellow to show the neces sary strength o f spinal column, but let’s act wisely in all we do. Let the temperance forces of Newberg stand together for the enforcement ot the law, by law ful means, and w e w ill continue to have the respect o f the public at large. We can’t afford to do anything else. It is not alone the man who sells intoxicants that lays himself liable t o a heavy fine and imprisonment, but the one who gives it aw ay as well. I t is better to be wise than to be counted with the foolish. There is a determination on the part o f the temperance loving people o f Newberg to see that the law in this part o f the coun ty shall be enforced. Hence the announcement is made that a re ward o f $100 will be paid for in formation against and convic tion of anyone who shall violate the local option law. Itissim plv a plain business proposition. If anybody wants to take chances on defying the law the oppor tunity is always at hand. The question is, does it pay? Prob ably we shall see.
