In our extended journey and the many tow ns and cities we visited we did not take much fancy to the old time places where the earmarks of the forty- niners are plainly visible. Aside from the associations there is a m usty smell about the buildings th at is repulsive. This is es pecially true o f Sacramento, the capital o f the state and one o f her oldest cities. In the matter of climate, if one is seeking a location where there is an even temperature all the year round, where it is neither to o h ot nor to o cold, San Diego will no doubt take the lead and Santa Barbara follow s as a very close second. A t San Diego a friend remarked to ns that if any fault could be found with the clim ate it was in the m onotony o f it, for it w as practically the same all the year round. "W hy” said he, “ my wife and I g ot hilarious the other evening as we were going home, on account o f a little wind storm that blew up, for it was a happy relief from the m onotonous weather condi tions that prevail here all the year round.” This man, w ho is an undertaker said his firm was doing a good business but that it was their harvest time at that season of the year and a little later business would drop off to small proportions, meaning of course that those who had gone as every additional despatch makes conditions worse instead o f better. We spent a very pleasant even ing at the home o f Rev. Thomas Armstrong, on Sixteenth street . just off Market, and up to the present writing we have not heard how they came out o f the disaster, though we have good reason for the hope that they were uninjured, as they had rooms on the lower floor o f a small tw o story frame building, with no large buildings near. While riding about the city in the observation car the con ductor said to us that we no doubt wondered what Would be come o f the city in case of fire, seeing so many wooden build ings, and he went on to explain that the lumber was nearly all redwood, which is slow to burn, and that since the fire depart ment was second to none in the On behalf o f the Newberg Board of Trade a public meeting was held in Crater’s hall on last Fri day evening tor the purpose o f raising money to assist in reliev ing the suffering in San Fran cisco. A committee composed o f F. H. Caldwell, H. R. Morris, M. Redmond, F. .A. Morris, f. C. Colcord, J. W. Coffin, Mrs. F. A. Elliott, and Mrs. G. W Cutts was appointed to solicit help and nearly a hundred dollars was subscribed by a half dozen pepple on the spot. The committee was in structed to buy a car load of potatoes and rush them forward at once. This was done and a car made up o f potatoes and flour as well as a car load o f lumber, which was donated by the Spaulding L ogging Com pany, was sent out on M onday’s freight. The company is also sending tw o cars of lumber from the Salem mill. The hands at the home mill have each donated one day’s pay which will add $150 to the fund and this with other subscriptions the com mittee has taken, along with some clothing and bedding will be sufficient to load another car. Our people have responded prom ptly to the call for aid and more will be given if it is needed. The total amofint so far given will aggregate about $800. ' A G O O D W A Y IS B Y the subject. The ones who are guilty of the “ repeating” habit are the w orst ever. Shall the women o f this tow n be obliged to cease speaking to a gentleman, for fear o f some scur rilous remarks being “ repeated?” Shall the women o f this tow n fear to enter an office of business in dread o f some one “ repeating” a bad thought that some low minded person has spoken? For shame! Let the women arise in indignation, and not listen to re marks that may be “ repeated,” and above all things be not guilty o f “ repeating” such. Lets •top it and call a halt. How can Christian people hope for the parity o f our young men and maidens when they (the pro fessed Christians) are constantly “ repeating” remarks o f a nature to lower the morals o f their neighbors in the eyes o f others. And w ho is my neighbor?
