bell, the interesting feature of
which w a s the fact that it w as
covered with a beautiful collec­
tion o f Oregon mosses, complete
so far as is known.
The display w a s arranged in
the order o f the rooms, visitors
first being shown the w ork o f
the prim ary grades and on up to
that o f the advanced students.
It is impossible to go into detail
in describing the various inter­
esting exhibits. Suffice it to sa}-
that exclamations, o f surprise
and appreciation were heard on
every side.
There were on exhibition sam­
ples o f school work of every de­
partment. The free hand paper
cutting and drawing by the
little folks attracted much atten­
tion. There were compositions
and original stories galore,
neatly bound, which showed to
good advantage the pupils’ work
in orthography,
penmanship
. and composition. And the good
thing
about
the -composi­
tion work is that practical
subjects, about which the stu­
dents know something, have been
chosen. They are for the most
part descriptive of the resources
of the state, county and town.
Newberg’s varied
industries
furnished fruitful themes, the
compositions being appropriate­
ly illustrated with photographs
o f the industry and plant de­
scribed. The drawing in all de­
partments was especially good.
There were flowers which should
have exhaled fragrance, original
pencil sketches of Oregon snow
capped mountains which have
been mistaken for engravings,
Gibson heads which would make

cracked that should be replaced before it cuts and grinds the
polished shaft that rests in it, or it might be that only a
touch of the hair spring in the proper place will remedy all
