and a few minor measures and the fix
ing of January 28 for the delivery of
addresses in memory of the late Senator
Hoar, the senate devoted its time to
the statehood bill. At 4:23 the senate
adjourned.

minor matters and at 4 :2S adjourned
until tomorrow.

chief accomplishment being the accept

tal carried is $29,192,962, a net in
crease of $434,772 over the amount ap

Denver, Jan. 16.—The National
Livestock association was rent in twain
today by the adoption of a new consti
tution which admitted the packers to
membership and provided an open
door through which the railroads of the
country might at any time become fact
ors in the control of the organisation.
The cattlemen, horse and swine grow
ers, together with representatives of
some of the affiliated industries, re
fused to agree to the new constitution,
withdrew when they considered its
adoption probable, and this afternoon
formed a new organisation under the
name of the American Stockgrawers’
association, whose aim it w ill be to
wield a dominating influence In the in
teract of the cattlegrower.
Roughly speaking, the sheepgrowers,
commission men and stockyards inter
ests remained with the Natfona Live
stock association, and the actual grow
ers of all other animals for the market
have gone with the new association.
The cattlemen have from the first
strongly opposed the admission into
their organisation of the packers and
especially of the railroads. They main-
tained that these two influences would
ultimately dominate the cattlegrowing

they refused to remain in an organisa
tion which included their representa

Chamber of Commerce of Berlin con
siders that the moment is favorable for
a movement loking toward a reciprocity
treaty between the United States and
Germany, and especially so because the
new system of reciprocity treaties Ger
many has concluded most probably will
affect American trade adversely.
The
Chamber of Commerce sent a_petition
to Preeident Roosevelt, which in part
follows :
“ The American Chamber of Com»
merce of Berlin, organised with the
pui^oee of furthering good relations
between the United States and Ger
many, especially in the direction of
commercial affairs, and including
among its members of leading concerns
of both nationalities trading between
the two countries, pray that you urge
upon congress and other authorities
the pressing need of prompt action for
a reciprocity treaty with Germany and
also of new laws and regulation» for
the appraisal of merchandise, to replace
the present very faulty and often un
just system which has been and still
is constantly causing much bitterness
of feeling among practically all the im
porters of commodities into ports of
the United States.”
