Aasoctate Editor. $1.00 Per Year in Advance. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1904. Th e number o f patients which are taken from this vicinity to P o rtla n d hospitals has given rise to the question w h y should n o t N ew berg have a hospital o f its ow n. The to w n is rapidly a tta in in g a size where there w ill be a demand for such an insti tu tion . A t present the Yam hill branch o f the Southern Pacific is in p re tty fair condition, but the patrons are w ondering whether the road is to be properly bal lasted. I f not the w inter rains w ill soon put it in much the same condition as before and much o f the summer’s w ork w ill necessarily be lost. I t ’s a case o f ballast and a g ood road bed, o r no ballast and a bed which reminds one o f riding in w inter o v e r a corduroy country road, the rails o f which are floatin g in a lob lollv o f mud. “ Count you r many blessings, name them one by one,” adm on ishes the old song, but the ad m onition is often little heeded by the singers. A man w h o comes fr o m a state where there is prac tically no horticultural industry, spent a few days here recently and could scarcely g et through ¿raving over the fruit which he found here in such abundance, and the fact th at so much w as g o in g t o waste, so little appre ciated, actually appalled him. And yet w e have been grum bling because the Ita lia n prune crop is short this year! “ Count you r m any blessings.” There is ju st one easy cure for th e man w h o is inclined to be skeptical as to the success and scope o f the L e w i a and Clark Centennial. L et him visit the ideal grounds, w a lk through the beautiful hillside park dow n to the lake, look across to the island where the fine governm ent build ing is to be erected, and connect ed w ith the main grounds by a lon g bridge; let him turn and take his w a y up the grand stair w a y to where the three main buildings are alread\r nearing completion, and he should by all means observe the forestry build ing as indeed he cannot help do ing. If, after being on the grounds an hour and having seen the rapid progress being made, he has not g o t into the spirit of the great enterprise, he is a “ knock er.” L et him lie kicked out o f th e state into utter darkness. W e do not believe the people o f N ew berg are indifferent on the subject o f obtaining a city park but w e do believe th at some are thoughtless or careless, in that they do not manifest a more en thusiastic interest and a more active co-operation in the m atter. Citizens certainly cannot belittle the g rea t importance o f the proj ect. The trouble is rather th at they are g ettin g in the habit o f a llow in g a few to do m ost ot the hard w ork in prom oting projects which are vita l to the welfare o f the tow n. In a w ay, the active w ork must l)e performed by a few , but it cannot be done w ith out the encouragement and sup p o rt o f the many. When the next public park meeting is called b y the comm ittee in charge, let each loyal resident feel an in dividual responsibility in being in attendance. Public School Leads in Flag Contest.
