“ The governm ent of the U nited
S tates agrees w ith th a t of F rance in
recognizing as the object to be o b ta in ­
ed from the governm ent of C hina a p ­
pro p riate re p ara tio n for the past and
su b s ta n tia l g uarantees lor th e fu tu re.
“ The president is glad to perceive in
the basis of n egotiations put forw ard
in th e m em orandum of O ctober 4 the
sp irit tn a t has an im ated th e d e c la ra ­
tions heretofore m ade by a ll th e pow­
ers in terested and would be pleased to
see the negotiations begun im m ediately
upon the usual verification ol creden­
tia ls.
“ It m ay be convenient to enum erate
th e clauses of th e m em orandum aud
to add some observations d ictated by
the a ttitu d e of the U nited States in the

cover in su ra n ce upon the life of his
w ife, w hom he killed D ecem ber 31,
1893, has been com m enced iu th is city
by Professor S. C. B hortridge, who is
now re sid in g a t K en n ett square, in
C h ester c o unty. The suit, w hich is to
recover the sum of $77,022 from the
P ro v id en t Life & T rust Com pany, is
one of th e m ost rem ark ab le in the h is­
tory of life in su ran ce. The tragedy
w hich ended th e the life M rs. Short-
ridge was enacted in M edia. Several
yea) s before Professor S hortridge had
com e to M edia w ith his wife aud fam ­
ily , and e stab lish e d w hat w as know n
as th e M edia academ y for young m en.
For several y e ars th e venture w as suc­
cessful, th e school having a hig h -class
p atronage. T hen Mrs. Hhurtvidge died.
