army of volunteers was disbanded,

of peace, and only the regular army re
mained to proserve order in the lute re
bellious states. Here was a time when
the Republican pnny could
have
established a military system on the
European plan, bud it been so minded.
We had a quarter of a million men in
tlie field when the war with Spain ended.
They woro returned to tlieir homes as
rapidly as possiblo, and the great volun-
teet army became a tiling of ttie past.
What justification has Mr. Bryan, or
any other Democratic orator for the at
rocious cliargo that it is Republican
polioy to establish such a military sys
tem? There is none whatever. No
American voter who lias intelligence
enough to mark his ballot can fail to see,
if lie will consider tbe matter, that Mr.
Bryan’s imperialism is a mere bugaboo.
The real danger is from free silver.
Every man who cast Ids ballot against
that fallacy in 1890 should line up solid
ly against it this year. Every young
voter, just entering upon the active
work of life, should join tho forces of
sound money to prevent a businesacrash
that will bring hard times to the coun
try nnd perchance injure him in busi
