If tiie kaiser consents to allow Colonel Soliwaizknp- pen, the German military attache at Paris in 1864, to testily before the court-inartiul, or to send a deposition, ot, what is considered still more proba ble, to allow his deposition to bo ac companied by the actual documents mentioned in the bordereau, then Drey fus is saved. If the emperor, how ever, deohlea that it is not in the in terests of Germany for Colonel Hchwurzkoppen to intervene, then Dreyfus’ case is hopeless and his con demnation certain. B-etirvy A m o n g G im n n -G n t h c r r r » . San FranclBOo, Sept. 8 . — The steam er Sequoia, which lias arrived from Clipperton island, reports that scurvy is causing much distress there. Five men have succumbed to the disease, and 28 others ure afflicted with tbe malady. In all there are only about 60 men on the island engaged in col lecting guano for shipment to this city. Those in tiie island were in a state of dire distress when the steamer ar rived on August II, for she bail been expected months before. Only 16 men wete fit to be Ht work, and a few days more would probably have put them on tiie sick list. The stores of tbe Se- quoin were levied upon, and lime Juice and vegetables were dealt out to those w ho were 111 , with the result that when she tailed all showed signs of improvement. Reports teceived by R. G. Dun <Js Co. ftom their coriespondents in tbe grain centers of Oregon, Washington and Idaho, show that the damage to wheat in 44 districts runs from a nom inal figure to 60 per cent of the crop, and, in a few instances, 60 per cent is exceeded. ¡Sixteen districts stated that there lias been no loss whatever. Out of tbe 44 centers mentioned, 80 reported the injury to fall wheat and 22 tbe injury to spring wheat as ex ceeding 10 pet cent. Tbs greatest damage was caused by heavy rains, and in many cases the correspondents de clared that if the storms continued the crops in their neighborhoods would be nearly destroyed. In a lew fields in Washington and Idalio, hot weather also bad sn injurious effect, and in some instances cold weather caused the freezing of lall-euwu wheat last win ter. Reports of the prospects for fall trade partook of tbe discouragement o f tbe farmers in tiie damaged districts. Tiie predictions, as a rule, were “ fa ir,” "n o t very fa ir," and “ not flattering,” while one correspondent thought it neces 8 ay to add to these lines, "there will be no distess,” and another tempered bis opinion “ fair” with "considering.” Many who are sta tioned in thriving places said tiie out look might be called fair if the rain would stop. Llyod Mifflin, tire poet, is a man of such retiring nature that few of his fellow-townsmen of Columbia, Pa., would recognize him on tiie street. A correspondent recently visited the town and asked for the house of Mr. Mifflin, tiie poet. “ There's a Mr. Lloyd Mifflin lives here,” said the trolley car conductor, "b u t I didn't know he wrote books.” D l i c o v a r jr o f L if e R o o k Isla art R o a d A d o p t » a A i n o k o - C u n - »un iter f o r T h e i r E n g i n e » . PEAFNKHS CANNOT ME CURED By local applications, as they cann ot reach the 0 .R .* H Pale as Death The Rock Island Railroad has estab lished a piecedent in the West by equipping their engines with smoke-con sumers, which entirely do away with the heavy volume of black smoke whioh is so disagreeable to passengers. This experiment has been thoroughly tested during the past few months, on theii Colorado Flyer, and has proved to be such a success that the Rock Island has adopted it over its entlie system, and, as soon as possible, all of then engines w ill be equipped with this new device and immediately be put back iuto set vice. This smokeless firing, as it is poiper- ly called, will be valuable to both pa tron and the road. To the patron it does away with the black, booty smoke and cindets, tints adding much to the pleasure of traveling; and. to tbe road, it is a saving in fuel as well as making the appearance and equiment of the train up to date. The good results from this new equipment are unlim it ed and everything is favorable and for the best interests of all. To make this smokeless firing a success, two things ate necessary; the equipment of the engine with the proper apparatus neces sary to consume tiie hydrocarbons, thrown off from the coal, and the thorough training of engineer and fire man in the manner of filing and the best methods of proceeding at all times in order to obtain tbe desired re sults. Tbe manner of equipment is briefly as follows: In the Are box of tbe en gine is built a hollow b-iek arch. Be low this and about a foot above the grates are bored four boles in the sides of tiie fire box. In each of these boles is inserted a Sharp’s patent deflecting air tube, connecting with the hollow arch. Through these tabes the out side air is drawn in and, aftei being heated, is allowed to mix with tiie un- consumed gasses or hydrocarbons: By tliis mixing tiie gasses are transferred into a perfect state of combustion and in this state they are consumed, and thoroughly disposed of, thus prevent ing them ftom being forced out idito tiie air as is the case today on nearly every railroad in the United States. Assistant-General Manager W. I. Allen, and Superintendent of Motive Power G. T. W ilson, of the Rock Island, express themselves as more tiian pleased with the results of this new move on the part of the road. So full of vigor that if one of its leaves be pinned to a warm wall another plant will grow. It is these same principles which enable Hostetter’s stomach Hitters to arouse to life and duty the overworked stomach. The sufferer from dyspepsia or any stomach trouble needs it.
