The order for 100 steel cars recently
given by the Pennsylvania Railroad
Company to the Sohoen Pressed Steel
Company of Pittsburg is a good ilius-
! tration of the fact that tho steel car is
no longer an ei|ieriment but an accept
ed type of railway rolling stock, says
the Engineering News. It is a noticea
ble fact, however, that a largo propor
tion of the steel oars constructed are
designed to carry heavier loads than
cars of timber construction.
The new
Pennsylvania cars, for example, are to
carry 110,000 pounds of ore, or 104,000
pounds of coal.
Their dead weight
will be 87,000 pounds and their length
will be 33 feet. The competition of the
steel car with the wooden cars of ordi
nary capacity will not be apparent
probably for some time, but that it
will come eventually the increasing cost
of timber and tho decreasing cost of
steel construction makes very certain.

On the morning of
April 20 a number of deserters from
the Seventh infantry appeared at the
fort and surrendered. They said they
had heard the rumors of war and were
anxious to participate. Col. Benham
ordered them to the guardhouse, but it
is understood that the stern old warrior
will be lenient and give the prodigals
an opportunity to fight.

Elmwood estate, near Cleveland, Ohio,
began life as a tinner, and made him

for furnishing tin cans to the Standard
Oil Uompauy. About ten years ago Mr.
Hopper purchased Elmwood farm, near
Cleveland, and started in to lead the
life of a gentleman farmer. Many
amusing stories are told of him In this
connection. 11c decided to turn It Into
a stock farm. The first thing he did
wus to purchase Bell Boy, a stallion,
for $51,1X10. Six months later Bell Boy
and the stables were burned. Mr. Hop
per became disgusted with the Idea of
ruining stock and gave It up.

Lash for Thieves In Alaska.
Some weeks ago a Yukon outfit that
had been packed from Ilyea to Sheep
Camp by a party on the way to the In
terior of the Klondike country was
stolen. A “ committee” of miners—such
lielng the ominous term by which thnt
sort of gathering Is designated In the
new country- -tracked the thieves to the
summit of Chllkoot I “ass, where the
lost pro;forty was recovered. Later the
“committee" captured two men and
brought them hack to camp for trial.
They gave the names of AYllllnm W el
lington and Edward Hanson.
Three of the “committee” favored
lynching Wellington and Hanson, but
they finally consented to a compromise
on sixty lashes for each of the two cap
tives.
This was accordingly undertaken.
Wellington had been “ formally” sen
tenced and was under nil escort to the

suddenly lie slipped from the arms that
