Tho fifty-fifth congress met in regular session on last Monday. The Secretary of State, Harrison It. Kincaid, has the thanks of this office for a copy of the election laws of Oregon. Telephone connection will soon be made between Spokane, Washington and San Diego, California, a distance of 1,829 miles. This will be the longest telephone line in the world. The fame o f South Dakota seems to be extending oven to the ends o f the earth. A woman recently arrived in that state from (South Africa, the bur den o f her bong being “ a divorce w anted.” The Uuiou party lias established head quarters in Portland, with our Col. J. C. Cooper in charge. Cal can make soap and is handy at a good many things. He will keep the boys who loungo about headquarters in good spirits by his quaint humor. are several varieties of tlieso offers ap pearing in newspapers and magazines— including many quite reputable [icriodi- cals— and it is not always easy in any particular case to say whether tho ad vertisement is more accurately classed under the term “ humbug” or “ swindle.” The Post-Office Department finds ttiat these “ offers” come under the pro visions of the lottery law. Tho example given in the circular sent out to pub lishers by the New York Post-Office gives tho names of "twenty important cities in Europe and America, omitting certain letters in each word,” and offers money prizes to tiie persons sending cor rect lists. Any intelligent child can (ill out a list in a few minutes, hut as some of the names given may be filled out as to tiie missing letters in two or tiiree different ways, all of which give as re sults names of cities, it is a pure chance whether or not any particular list agrees witli that originally made out by those who offer tho prize. It is this element of chance which has lod to the exclusion of these offers from tiie mail. Apart from that element, it is obvious that there is every possible opportunity for trickery and unfair dealing in these schemes, and any one who will take the trouble to read carefully one of these wordy and misleading advertisements will see that they are almost, if not quito, universally designed to impose .on tho credulity of tiie great army of ignor ant persons who believe that they can get something for nothing —Outlook. Tiie figures slew ing tiie extent of tho trade in luxuries ure equally startling. For flowers alone, New York pays $12,- 000,000 each year. The violet leads with $:t,000,001) and tiie rose conics nixt with $2,500,000. It would buy tho entire farm property in either Okla homa, Arizona, New Mexico or the Dis trict of Columbia. It would pay the entire net State debt of Massachuesctts The money spent for roses and violets alone would pay for all the cement mined in this country during 1805. It is also stated on good autiiority that, in New York strte, there is more money invest ed in growing chrysanthemums than in growing peaches. r ttn u t ii k c o t NTT P B ia a . It is a map that lias long lieen needed in the county and Mr. Branson is putting in a large amount of painstaking labor. He lias been at it since June and it is a correct map. Without wishing to flatter Mr. Branson tho map in workmanship excels any thing ever produced iu the county and we lio[>e that it will bo a financial suc cess to him. Tho title of tiie work is “ Nehalein, a Story of the I’acific, A. D. 1700.” It is rich in adventure and is the story of the beeswax ship whose cargo is yet to be found in the sand at several points near Mt. Necarney’s base. Mr. Huge rb spent several months in the neighborhood whore this wax is found and became perfectly familiar with tiie Indian legends regarding tht> burial of treasure, the wreck of tiie ship, and the lone survivor who wasted his hfe away waiting, waiting, waiting for a ship. The report reflects credit upon the compiler and is j an honor to the state. It can safely be | eaid that in no state of the Union in few, j if any, countries of the world can a sim- | ilar work be found as exhaustive aa this one. While the report is not designed for the general reader, it will be found to be invaluable to the student, the in vestor and to every one who wishes to Itave for reference data concerning the climate of Oregon. A brief summary of Oregon weather data is of interest. The mean tempera ture of the whole state is 49degrees; the highest recorded in the state is 109 de grees; the lowest 39 degrees below zero. Tho former occurred iu Umatilla county, the latter in Klamath county. The aver age annual precipitation for the state is 38 inches; tho place of heaviest rain in the state is at Glsuora, tne summit of tiie Coast range of mountains, in Tilla mook county, where 129 inchos, over ten feet, falls annually. Nelialem, tiie same county, is second, with 117 inches, G ov ernment Camp, on .he slope of Mount Hood, has 104 inches, and Langlois, Curry county, where figs grow, has 102 inches. A peculiarity of distribution of rainfall ia shown at Cascade Locks, where 80 inches annually fall, while at The Dalles, 45 miles east, 15 inches, and at Portland 45 miles west, 46 inches falls. The least rainfall, which includes melted snow, is reported from Arlington, G il liam county, where but 8 46 inches an nually occur. The places having from 9 to 10 incites of rainfall are Umatilla, Fife, Crook county, New Bridge, Union county, Vale, Malhuer county. More raiu falls at New Orleans (03 inches), Little Rock (55), Vicksburg, and Charles town, H. C. (57), Boston (46 42), Louis ville (47) and at Memphis (54) than at Portland, Or., (45 85). New York city, Washington, D. C., and Indianapolis have within tiie fraction of an inch as much rainfall as has Portland Or. Ma ny other facts of interest and of value might be quoted, but the foregoing is sufficient to show the scope of informa tion contained in the report audits great value. ______________ The work of tiie ladies of Salem head ed by Mrs. Governor Lord, done during A lire bug has made repeated attempts tiie past year, in awakening an interest to start a big conflagration in Portland in flax culture in Oregon has stirred up in tbe past two weeks and there seems more than local interest in this industry. to be little effort made on the part of Tho Rural New-Yorker in speaking of the police to catch the guilty party. the efiorts made by tlicoe women says : The city government seems to be rotten It is said that the climate of Oregon is from the mayor down. unusually favoruble to tiie cultivation of fiax of a very fine quality, tiie fiber be Two young women living in Yakima ing particularly long and lustrous.
