aud a graduate of Yale, is iu the city
prison aw aitin g extradition to Fort
W orth, Tex., where he is wanted for

ago by detectives as he was coming

crooked work a t Colorado Springs,
Denver and Kansas City, where he and
a partner named J. T. McKay are
said to have cut a wide sw ath in first-
classs hotels, w ithout paying for tbe
entertainm ent.

received a circular from the polioe at
Colorado Springs stating th a t one J. T.
McKay and J. W. Ash had been sw in ­
dling hotels a t Kansas City and the
Springs. It was also stated th a t W al­
lace, who sometimes w ent by the name
of Brown, had deposited a (20,000
d raft a t F o rt W orth, representing h im ­
self to be a w ealthy cattlem an. Then
he aud McKay traveled about the coun­
try issuing checks on tbe w orthless
draft. The sum of (580 was realized
in th is way.
W hen the pair left Colorado Springs,
they came to this oity, arriv in g here
on Septem ber 15. McKay registered
a t the O ccidental hotel under the nam e
of J. F. Camden.

San Franoisoo, Sept. 29. — An o rd in ­

w eek's personals announced th a t a
Glasgow firm of attorneys is looking
for John M uFarlane, who was last
beard of in San Francisco five or six
years ago. Baok of the advertisem ent
lies a story of O riental romance, rare
even in th is day of strange happenings.
The fath er of Jo h n M cFarlane, who
is w anted, w as a canny Scotchman, a
free lance, out for adventure. The re ­
su lt of his career was th a t (750,000 is
w aitin g for bis son. He was a jew eler
by trade, and, a fter w andering about
for some tim e, finally settled iu Hong
Kong in 1840. Before long, he amassed
a fortune, ai.d then, unaw are th at
there w as a law ag ain st the m arriage
of foreigners w ith natives, married a
m an d arin ’s daughter. The affair a l­
most precipitated a rio t in Hong Kong,
but w as ultim ately smoothed over
through the influence and wealth of
his father-in-law , and in time a son
was born christened John. In 1860
M cFarlane returned to Glasgow, invest­
ing his money in an iron foundry,
w ith bis brother as manager.
On b is death, W alter M cFarlane sent
for his half-C hinese nephew, and had
hiih educated in England.
As he
grew , he developed his fath er’s nom ­
adic tastes, and drifted about England,
to the neglect of his books. F inally
he cam e to A m erica, and later to C ali­
fornia.
Jo h n M cFarlane w as living in San
Francisco when his nncie died, five
or six years ago. He had made a for­
tune, and owned a half-interest in the
Saracen iron foundry, besides much
real estate.
The nephew consulted
Carm en & Donohne, attorneys, as to
his chances of inheritance, bnt there
was a widow, and the estate so tied np
th a t Jo h n M cFarlane gave np in d is­
gust. The law yers did all they could
for him , but he left the city, and never
sent them his address. Last week a
letter arrived from a Scotch firm asking
for inform ation of M cFarlane.

aged 7. The little boy, who was a
cripple, was visiting the M cllhaney
borne. The boys were left a t home to­
gether and quarreled.

Upon this she became nervous and said
she wished to be alone. Shortly after,
Brook heard a scream and found her

was so incensed th a t he started in quest
of Brock, sw earing to kill him , but the

eral days began to realize th a t she had
been defrauded and th a t she was in
debt at a fashionable hotel, w ith n o th ­
ing in her parse to w arran t her stay.

had reached (90, when the hotel m an ­
agem ent insisted on paym ent.

widow explained her position, and was
sent aw ay from the hotel, her baggage
being held for her bill. The woman
