were filed today in the federal oourt iu
the suit of the United States against
Postmaster U . Mellon, of Spokane, to
recover »17,328 alleged to be the short
age resulting from depositing money in
banks whioh became insolvent.
Mallou
says ♦1 ,728 of the amount was depos
ited 111 the Citizens' National bank by
instruction of the government, and
»2,600 more was iu the shape of drafts
bought from the Citizens’ National on
Portland, the bank fa ilin g before the
drafts reached their destination.
Gov
ernment officials had also ordered the
drafts bought through the bank nameil,
and the postmaster claim s he is not lia
ble.
The other »10,000 is a mystery.
N o one knows for w hat purpose, it is
alleged, to have been used, and no
mention of tho item is made in the
complaint other than in a geueral way.
Mallon suys it mystifies him.

hours and burned itself out at 9 o’clock
tonight.
