An em inent Glasgow aural Burgeon, Dr. T hom as Barr, has com m unicated to th e British Medical association some valuable d a ta concerning th e in jurious effects of railw ay whistles u p o n th e hearing, in railway whistles the arrangem ent for regulating the press ure of steam passing through from the boiler to th e whistle is not usually suf ficiently delicate. If the boiler should be u n d er high pressure th e whistle is very much louder and shriller th an when it is under low pressure. So th a t when a passenger train is leaving a sta tion for a long run, and having, th ere fore, its boiler under high pressure, the whistle is unnecessarily loud and shrill, ju st when those qualities are least re quired. Dr. B arr urges upon the atten tio n of the association th e adoption of lower pitched whistles, with proper regulators, so as to lessen the present jarrin g of sensitive ears and nerves. T he ques tion of w hether a w histle of lower pitch th a n th a t usually em ployed would be as efficient as an acoustic signal is said to have been solved by th e intro d u c tion on a Scotch railw ay of a new form of whistle very much resem bling an or gan pipe. The steam is forced on the lower edge of a brass tu b e closed a t the upper end, and the sonorous impulses are taken up by the cu rren t of air in the tube and immensely re-enforced, the pitch depending upon th e length of the tu b e as well ¡vs upon the force of the blast. The sound resembles very m uch a steam boat whistle, being loud and much lower in pitch and, th ere fore, less painful to th e ear th a n the ordinary railw ay w histle.—New York Comm ercial Advertiser. r w .k x c i u k E scu rial, th e palace o f th e O n th e day a fte r w e tu n n e le d D o u b t e r f« < »i\e u C imi ti«-»t i<jna k la ; S p a n ish kind's, ban been te rm e d th e Gf t h t< C onfederate sto c k a d e a t Salis- P r o o f W ill h I le l i d N oi H e l l e r « e ig h th w o n d e r of th e w orld S itu a te d N .
