The Oregon Stale Board o f Horticul ture is making a great effort to excite uni versal interest among the fruit growers, handlers of fruit, and nurserymen throughout the state in regard to the in jurious insects infesting the orchards and in some instances nurseries. About all tho old orchards, and a great many young ones are infested with some Insect pest which is gradually sapping the vital ity from the trees and if left to themselves, will oventually kill them. Thu Board re alizes fully that without the aid of every one who has a few old trees that are in fested, as well as the larger ore-bardlets, in fighting these nest* •» useless to at- ___i to eradicate them, and it earnest ly asks all to aid them in this work. In this beautiful valley which is de stined to tie one of the greatest fro!» |..u- dnci'mz ffiai.!->. toe slate, 1 am sorry to say I find a great many old moss covered orchards whose usefullness is entirely gone and which serve as breeding places for these pests. It is imimssihle for me to visit »11 these (daces |>ersona!ly and I would respectfully ask the owners to cut them down and burn them up, root and branch if they are beyond redemption and they are not willing to go to any ex pense in cleaning the trees, spraying, otc., etc., and by so doing aid us in our work. Oregon. A reference to the Slate Weath er Bureau as given in their report to the last State legislature, prove the incor rectness of statements about weather from “ memory.” Anyone can obtain the above report upon apiJication. As many (ample are desiroua of knowing the an nual rainfall here, I send (lie following table compiled from the above report. The d:s iaii'y in means of rainfall is larg - ly due to the fact that the last six years excepting 1887, have been much below the average. Turn|a-raturcs are very ev en in the Willamette valley and one re cord shows fairly for all. E dmund R obinson , W liin fell, Newberg, Or., Jan. 1, 1892.
