f SOME SUPERSTITIONS. I A ^ ------------ FEW OF FANCIES X>ldn't Believe TH E AND PO PULAR FAIRY In Gliottts, FEARS, TA L E S . but Afrulri of Them — Things W orn and Carried to Pre vent Disease —Unlucky to Go Under a L ad d er—In and Out the Same l>oor. The probable truth is that there is not one of The Globe s readers who does not at least half believe in some sui>erstition. Somewhere in your lives you have a little private closet where you Leep one or more pet superstitions locked up out o f sight of your friends, and, for I he most part, out o f your own sight. But now and then you unlock the door, or they get out through the keyhole; then they look at you in the twilight with their weird eyes, full of the mystery of the past, and you find yourself on your knees before them. Perhaps you are half ashamed of them, because you do not more than half believe in them, but when hey get you alone they master you. You are like Mine, do Stael. A friend said to her one day, “ Do you be lieve in ghosts?” “ No,” she replied, “ but 1 am afraid of them, though.” A LONESOME LADY. Col. Ingersoll dedicated his first vol ume of lectures to “ Eva A. Ingersoll, a woman without superstition.” In the early mining days in California, when selfish rascality seemed to be the rule, an old miner who had been rejieatedly “ fleeced” was very much astonished at the remarkable honesty o f u young man who had just paid back some money which had been given him by mistake. Thinking ho could not have many com panions in such deeds the old man stepped up to him, laid his hand on his shoulder and said, “ Stranger, don’t you find yourself awfully lonesome about these parts?” So I have often thought that if Mrs. Ingersoll is really altogether “ without superstition,” she must some times find herself ‘awfully lonesome.” I remember, when a boy, that one of my brothers used to wear about bis neck a red woolen cord to prevent the nose bleed. The only thing clear in my mind on the subject was that it did not pre vent it. At any rate it used to bleed very often, w bile the rest o f us, who did not wear one, were never troubled at all, except in those cases that all who have been boys will understand, where a post, or the ice in skating, or a snow hall, or some 'Hlier hoy’s fist came in somewhat vioien contact with (he most prominent feature o f our faces. 1 suppose, how ever that there was somo fanciful con nection between the red o f the string and the red of the blood, and an incipient • homeopathy suggested that “ liko would cure like.’’ I also remember, when a child, how some o f the larger boys used to carry about a horse chestnut in their pockets as a preventive of rheumatism. This is one o f the mysteries 1 have never fath omed. Only it does seem a w illful per versity for people to sillier so, just tosavo the trouble of carrying a horse chestnut. Just as it seems pure malico in any one ever to die when one looks through an apothecary shop, reads the advertise ments in the newspapers, or knows how Dr. Cullis cures peoplo by simply praying for them, and then telling them they are w* 11. U abble That Always f o l l o w » a Crowd. Have you ever been in the vicinity of the Ludlow Street market on a Friday morning? Well, if you have not you have missed a sight. Ludlow Street market comprises that portion of the city hounded by Hester and Canal and by Essex and Orctiard streets. Every Friday, from sunrise to sunset, it is the liveliest neighborhood in this city. The yells and whoops of an army of Comanches or Donny brook fair itself never furnished the noise found here every market day, as Friday is called. The sons and daughters of Israel flock from all portions of the city, and mingle with tho denizens of the down town dis tricts. Hoboken and Jersey City send their delegations ready for bargains, and before noon the street is impassable. Ragged jackets and scant wraps mingle with sealskins and silks, while white bearded patriarchs jostle elbows with the bright eyed and red lip[ied Jew ish maidens and their swarthy, stalwart brothers and fathers, all keen for a bar gain and totally unconscious of tlie pict uresque feature they make in the middle I o f Gotham. In the sunshine's sudden bursting I oozed from a topmost bow. And I drank that splendor thirsting— There is no such sunshine now! And the wings that came round me flashing— None like them are fluttering herw— I caught in ray heavy plashing And sealed in my shining sphere. Oh, life that was wild and glorious When tho elements wrought for man. And waved over Hre victorious. Shaped the earth to her aucient plan! Then the tides. In the great world change* Rose in their mighty turn. Rolled over the flr tree's ranges And the phune of the giant fern. And ages had passed and ages, When the winds scooped the deep sea floor, And the seas in their storm blown rages Tossed me to light once more. And now, half a Jest it may be. Half a charm, you hung in your mirth lloung the throat of the new born baby. The oldest thing on earth! —Harriet I'reacott bpofford in 8 t Nicholas Hereditary Taints. One result of tlio labors of physiolo gists lias been tho clearing of the mental vision, and the gradual comprehension of tlie great, pervasive und potential fact o f “ heredity.” “ The sins o f the fathers shall lie visited upon the children," said Moses more than 3,000 years ago. Proba bly he comprehended in butu very small measure tho significance of his own utterance. Not only do parents transmit to children their mental peculiarities, their moral tendencies, tho features of tlie face, the stoop of the shoulders and tho trick o f the gait, hut they pass on to them tiieir blood, their brain, their glands, their very soul and life. W e do not mean to say that heredity is a tyrant from which there is no escape, and tiiat as is tlie parent in constitution and con- duct, so also must ho tlie children to the remotest generation. I f that were one o f tlie discoveries of physiology, small thanks would he due to tlie science from overburdened man. But it is not so. Tlie parent himself, as is well known, can m odify and make worse or lietter itotli his constitution and his character. Similarly, tlio child's constitution and character may lie changed, until, by tho operation o f tlie law of heredity itself, a not very remote descendant may he tlio antipodes o f iiis early progenitors. The discovery of an existing inherited taint of disease or of vice in a child is not u cause for regret, but for thankfulness. Tlie disease taint itHi lf is, o f course, to lie deplored, and so is tlie inherited vice; hut its early dis covery is to lie hailed with gratitude as pointing out lines o f physical and moral treatment which may lead to tlio prac tical enfeeblement o f tho taint or even to its eradication.—London Hospital. H er I ill lier'. Poor ('ilfill'il. THE UNLEAVENED BREAD. Every man, woman and child bears a basket, and they ure out for material for | their Sunday dinner, tho “ Kosher" food for tlie “ Slialies" table, killed and cured I according to rites prescribed when the race was young. Notwithstanding tlie 1 semi-religious errands o f the marketers, the traditional shrewdness of the race is the chief feature of the bargaining. ' The first places visited by every one of the market men and women are the ] stands where tho hardies, or unleavened 1 bread, is sold. The loaves are first given j a thorough inspection, and then the price is asked. This is followed by an offer o f a cent or two lower, and, after haggling a few minutes, a purchase is made. Tliero is reason for the haggling and tho close inspection. The bardies loaves, like other pro ductions, aro subjected to a rejuvenating treatment beforo being offered for sale, when they aro stale, and knowing ones can tell this l>y looking them over care fully. When not fresh tho loaves are squeezed and handled so as to make them soft, then scented to prevent the sourness from being detected, and then put on tho stands. The purchaser feels of the loaf, smells it, and then balances it ia his hand to see that it is not under weight. Then it is turned over, as though it were some precious metal instead of a five cent loaf, and then tho driving commences. Tlie dealer is told that ho is nothing short o f u highwayman—that tho same article could ho purchased somewhere else for half tho money. The fish stands are highly important, j for every orthodox Hebrew must have fish with his meat on Sliabes. Here, also, tlio bargains are tightly driven and 1 the inspection thorough und searching. ! Like tlie bread, the fish, too, are some times doctored. They aro perfumed, the gills painted red and plenty o f salted ice water thrown over them to make them fresh and firm, and it takes a good judgo to detect the deception.
