jew eler th1* other day. “ T h e individ
ual who could sport a gold watch and
chain a dozen years ago was consid
ered a person of wealth and property.
But he isn't now. W h y, yon w ill find
gold watches in the pockets o f our
Btrect-car conductors, and I have even
known them to wear handsome dia
mond ring»*. Did you e ver notice the
ostentatious manner in which a young
man handles his first gold watch? It
is rather amusing. Usually he carries
it iu a chamois leather pouch, und is
very careful not to breathe on it or
touch the case with his lingers. He
consults it every fifteen minutes for
the first month, hut he soon tires of iL
and then considers it a horrible bore
to he asked for the time. T h e demand
for gold watches was never greater
than it is to-day.
Watch companies
are kept very busy tilling orders, and
we retail jew elers do a good business
in this lin e.'1
“ W hy is it that watches are so much
cheaper now than a few years ago?"
“ W ell, for one thing, the watch
movements are a great deal cheaper.
Gold is just exactly the same price per
pennyweight. T h e reduction in price
is confined to the movements. T h e
watch movements of the standard
Am erican
m ike
are
very cheap.
Those in common use in gold watches of
the cheapest grade are from $10 to $*¿0
each, and some of the best movements
are worth at wholesale $2.“» to $30.
There is, however, a high-priced, tine
American movement which may cost
you $73. hut they are not put in ord i
nary cases. A watch that you paid
$100 for a few years ago you can get to
day for $00, and this $00 watch w ill
have a $10 or $13 movement In it. For
$30 you should get a movement cased in
solid 14-carat gold, weighing from 4^
to 60 pennyweights. 'The purchaser
will get more service out o f a 14-carat
case than he w ill out of an 18-carat.11
“ H ow can dealers offer the public
solid gold watches for $4 I and $83P11
“ Th ey are not solid hy any means.
There are some unprincipled makers
who w ill mark a case o f 10 carat out
side and 8 carat inside 14 carat, and a
10 and 14 carat would he marked 18
carat. T h ere is no law in Am erica
to prevent this. T h e case is made of a
(im position which holds a gold plat
ing linely. This composition is some
times very heavily plated, and will wear
for several years without showing the
base mnt.nl.
T h e r e is
lit t le

in disposing o f thorn as solid gold
cases, and in this wav the price is sur
prisingly low. T h ere is more oppor
tunity for deception in the movement
and case of a watch than in almost
any other article.
'The amount of
money invested in a watch offers much
inducement to experim ent. Th e case
manufacturer is not necessarily obliged
to know much about the movement of
a watch
He makes his c;»ses to lit the

in fact, holds as th oroughly important
relation to the festive occasion as does
an undertaker lo the funeral. T h e

nor a hack d river, but is supposed to
be a woman of fact and business, who

herself having the general supervisioa
