acting commanding officer of the post and commanding
officer of the 11th Group had disembarked in Alaska with
a regiment of engineers in 1942. He began two years of
military and spiritual leadership in the territory by ad
dressing not only members of his command, but citizens
of Juneau, with a Mother’s Day message. He said, in part:
“If you are ever in Washington, D. C., go to the Lincoln
Memorial and stand in front of the huge statue of Lincoln
and read the greatness and the strength in that powerful,
melancholy face. Note the strong, awkward grace of his
hands, the almost superhuman majesty of his image. Re
member the great things he has done. Realize that God
graces the human race with such men only very rarely.
Then finally recall how by these words he assigned the
credit for all his accomplishments: 'All that I am. or ever
hope to be, I owe to my beloved mother.’
“In return for the many gifts your mother has given
you. just make her happy. It takes so little. You made
earth seem like heaven to her the very first moment she
ever saw you. Each little success or accomplishment of
yours, such as your first word, your first party, your
school graduation—each brought bright tears of joy to
her eyes. She has great need of such tears, for she has
known far too many bitter ones. These tears of joy are
her life. Grant them to her. Write her a letter today.
You can make her eyes grow bright again, and her heart
happy.”
These are thoughts to be remembered by every soldier
as long as he is away from home.

We lielieve the above photograph represents the m aster touch in
th at art. The glim m er and sheen of the rich, luxurious m aterial

these subtle designs in well-blended light and shadow. The con

light the rich contours in sheer, unprovoked beauty. Oh. yes.
