Page Seven A-52 Athletes Monopolize G! Track Meet Soldiers of platoons in A-52 literally monopolized a prelimin ary track meet sponsored by the bettalion Saturday to determine platoon champions. Of the 600 men who participated, represen tatives of Co. A platoons made the best time and best jumps in the five events scheduled. Best time for the 100-yard dash was made by Gilbertson and Tavis of the third platoon who tied, running the course in 10 seconds. Schumaker of the fourth pla toon came first in two events, completing the 440-yard run in 64 seconds and clearing 19 feet, two inches in the running broad jump. Four company A men cleared the five-foot mark in the high jump. They were Cheek and Fos- chi of the first platoon, J. Smith of the second platoon and Graf of the fourth platoon. Best time for the 880-yard re lay went to Park, Persons, Wick- ersham and Roscoe, all of the third squad of the second pla toon. Time: 2 minutes, 1 second. Although Company A men made the best time and best jumps in these events they are not to be considered company champions, Lt. Vernon E. Vrana, battalion adjutant, pointed out. A track meet to determine com pany champions was scheduled for the latter part of the week. By laying out six broad jump pits, three high jump hurdles, three 100-yard tracks and three 220-yard ovals on which the 440 and 880-yard events were run, the battalion, commanded by Maj. J. Fuller, was able to run off platoon events for three com panies in the brief space of two hours. Company D, a special training unit, did not participate.
