were too large. He was given a
size smaller and again returned
with the same story.
The clerk, realizing something
was a little haywire by then,
looked at the queue of rookies
lined up trying on their G. I.

group had taken off their own
shoes and were fitting the gal­
oshes to their stockinged feet.

dead horse was supposed to be,
one member of the detail had
stepped on a freshly dug square

“ Guess he was buried too shal­
low,” the sergeant said. “ Do it
over.”
As the sergeant made his re­
port back at the guard house,
the Provost Marshal interrupt­
ed.
“ That doesn't sound right.
What color was that horse?”
“ White,” said the sergeant.
“ Take the boys back,” the mar­
