Everybody is familiar with Ashland’s noted climate, water,
educational and social excellencies, and t*>e superiority of its
people in the more elegant and refined arts of life. These
features li>ive become so proverbial that many people are lia
ble to overlook the fact that we have some of the substantial
elements of industry and life with us. There is a seeming
dearth of knowledge in the community as to what it is living
upon. As an example, a few weeks ago a real estate man
i was asked by a correspondent if there was a pay roll in Ash-
' land. He replied that the Railroad Company paid out $12,-
000 per month, and was afraid that he was exaggerating.
When the list and number of employes running out of Ash
land, those employed in town and those on the Siskiyous were
printed they showed a pay roll that will not be below $20,000
per month. We have therefore undertaken to further enlight
en ourselves as well as the community as to the other pay
rolls that go to make Ashland happy.

Organized Stock Thieves.
. James Lackey of Ontario reports tbe dis
covery of a regular transportation bureau
in the interior region for tbe purpose of il
legally removing stock out of <he country.
It is evident that there is such a chain of or
ganization from California to the Missouri
River. A link in this chain, who will
be a resident of tbe country where he oper
ates, will hold blmself in readiness to move
to the next station with the drive at any
hour, day or night. The stolen s'oek is
turned over to him, and h» makes a hurried
drive, and in turn gives them to tbe next
agent and returns at once ro bis neighbor
hood, where he is seen every day or two.
and of course does not attract sioricion.
In this way large numbers of cattle and
horses are driven out of the country every
month, and r.o one of tbe guilty is missed
from bis regular haunts Stock with en
tirely strange b'amis is often found through
out the regions in which the gang operates,
and this is looked upon as evidence of rapid
transit in tbe thieving line.

• Prof. Thomas P. Robb arrived Tues

expert the oil lands of the Southern Ore

Yesterday he looked over the Samp
son district with Secretary F. G. Mc
Williams, and back of W. H. Shepherd’s
place and in front of the Ellen I. Wells
place some handsome specimens of oil
sand was discovered. There were plenty
of stones, which when rubbed together
smell very offensively of petroleum.
Professor Robb says they are fine speci

base and not the crude petroleum. An
