VALLEY RECORD. The Board of Director*, the Mid land UoMtraclinn Company'* Itep- reaentaiive* and Contractor Hale Meet in Ashland Directors Baldwin and Moore of Klam ath Falls, Horn of Hornbrook and Mc Williams. VanHorne, McCall and Wood of Aahland, met at their office* in opera house block yesterday with W. W. Thompson and Geo. N. Lyman, repre senting the Midland Construction Co., who have taken the bonds and are to I construct the road, and John Hale of ' Portland, the building contractor. The business of the meeting that drew j them here was of a technical character , to remedy some omissions and defects in ' the papers. One matter was the word- I ing of the bonds. In tbe original instra- : ment they were 40 years duration at 5 per cent., with tbe option of paying them off after 20 years. When the in strument was handed to tbe capitalists : who are to supply the Midland Construc tion Co. with tbe finances, they asked that the bonds be 40 yean straight, with out option. Contractor John Hale’s time of beginning work was also extended 15 days—from the 1st to the 15th of Octo ber—and he is allowed until December 31,1901, to finish his work. AU parties announce that work will begin right away. Klamath Falls, Or., Sept. 23.—George T. Bildwin, president of the Oregon Mid land Railroad, has returned from an ex tended tour of Oregon and California. He state* freely that bis mission waa to arrange fer the inauguration of construct ion work on this new Oregon-California railwav. He confirms Tbe Oregonian's recent report of a deal with Coggins Bros.’ sawmill, at Igerna, Cal., to furnish 75,000 tie*, or sufficent number to con- sUuc^tbe road from its iaitial pqint, at Klamathon, Cal., to thé edge ot the timber belt in Oregon. This point gained. It is tbe purpose of the com pany to procure ties by contract from local owners of wooded tracts, and as far as possible, to employ the residents of this section in getting out tbe timber re quired to complete the road to its ter minal point at Klamath Falls. It is well known, however, that local labor is large ly employed at good wages, and foreign tie contractors have arrived within tbe past few days to make a “quiet” cruise of timber along the survey of the proposed road. Camps have been located at eeveral points by small partie*, and tem porary quarters established, with a view to an extensive examination of the forests and the lav ol the country. One of thee- Klamath riv I camps is near the dam on er, 10 milee west of Keno, in Klam.Uh county, and settlers have been engaged to show the contractor* about tbe coun try. In going from Klamath Falls to Ash land, the timber belt commences at Keno, 12 miles from thia place, and then for 27 mile* there is a heavy growth of stately pinos suitable for tbe manufactute of lumber of any kind. Sugar pines, five to eight feet in diameter, straight as an arrow and of great height, are upon every band. While thousands of acres of this timber tract have been secured by eastern capitalist* and will be held for speculation, yet »ime of tbe best lands along the line are owned by local settlers and will be sold at reasonable prices.
