The sum of $419.93 was the result of the latest crushing of 12*-* tons of ore from Winningham & Pene’s quartz mine on Applegate as sold at the mint. The free gold went $33.59 per ton. Develop ment work is progressing. The new Grand Applegate Mining Co , have finished ditch cleaning, etc., and last week began piping day and night with a head of water that will last them the year round. Ten men'are at work. A rich body of ore has been struck on the Pike’s Peak claim of the Kubli mine on Galls creek, carrying, according to carefnl estimates, about $200 to the ton. The vein is eighteen inches wide, and in dications are that this is the main ledge and that the small vein known as the Gold Standard, and the original dis covery, is only a large and highly min eralized stringer from the main ledge, and that they will come together and form one large ledge. They are parallel i and only four feet apart. Mr. Kubli thinks they have out $2500 of the rich quartz, anil no indications yet of the ' rice ore being exhausted. The ore is be ing carefully sacked as it is taken out. Mail. L. E. Browning while in from the “Yellow Horn Mine,” stated that their property was looking first rate and they are pleased with the development thus far made. They now have in a 140 foot tunnel, with a 30 foot shaft. They have another tunnel started, and are now* con sidering the question of a mNl. They now have 130 tons of ore on the dump, Their ore essays—lowest $10.10, highest $864, per ton; but averages across ledge about $129. The property is on the same mountain as the Victor Jr. pro perty, and he tells us that some of the ore can not be told from the Greenback. They keep from two to four men at work.( The owners of this property are Messrs. Browning & Sons and Mr. Conger. Portland Mining Stock Exchange is almost ready to open. The business of the exchange will be transacted in the Auditorium Hall of Commerce. Already fully fifteen brokers and their families have become residents of Portland. W. H. Hampton, of the Columbia mine at Placer, says they are now clean ing up at their mine. They will make a good clean-up, much better than last year, but not as large as was expected on account of no snows in the mountains, which cut the late run short Mr. Hampton says he believes all the placers in that section have now closed down. The khaki tunic has two large out side breast-pockets, each with a flnp. These are really double pockets, for they are subdivided so as to hold a store of. reserve ammunition in addi tion to the handkerchief and any small personal belongings. The ordinary supply of animuiiition is of course car ried in the bandolier, which is of broivn leather to match tliekbaki. There are also two small skirt pockets. One holds a card with the name, number, and statement as to the next-of-kin of the wearer, the otper a supply of lint for “first aid.” The old serge tunic, which the khaki has ousted, was de signed to serve for either home or for eign service.
