COUNTY, OREGON, THURSDAY,
MINING ITEMS.
A Hornbrook correspondent writes
that the O. & O. mine located near Car-
son Gulch, about 4 miles from Horn
brook, has been worked by a number of
different parties without success. Some
20 months ago C. W. Tyrer & Son, prac
tical Colorado miners, secured a bond
and; lease on tbe property, which at
that time had a black eye, aud everyone
seemed to think the mine worthless.
These gentleman, however, started a
cross-cut tunnel, drove about 3000 feet,
where they cut a vein some 30 feet be
tween walls, but the ore was not in
quantities to pay. They then drove
about 100 feet along the vein on the
hanging wall and found small bunches
of high grade ore, then drove a drift
about 70 feet on the foot wall, and found
a fine ore body. The writer visited the
mine a few days ago and found every
thing in fine shape. All work is right
up to date, and in one of the main leads
there is one ore body over 70 feet in
length, the ore about 30 inches wide,
and in some places much wider. The
ore carries good values and shows lots of
free gold, with 150 feet of ground above
the level to stope. On the same level
100 feet south, there is a body of ore
from 4 to 20 inches, that is remarkable.
It is ribbon rock, and every particle of
that streak is covered with gold. You
do not need to hunt for a piece that
shows gold, for every rock ia,a specimen.
These gentlemen seem to know what a
good thing is, as they have very little to
say on the subject. Their 5 stamp mill
is running right along, with a new rock
crusher, and one of the best concen
trators ever made. No admittance
notices are posted up there, but the
owners are ready and pleased to show
the mine to the mining men. as they
had come to California to stay. It is
expected this mine will be a great pro
ducer in the early future, as it has
every appearance of a genuine fissure
vein, with a true course, which dips to
the weet about 30 degrees, and carries
true selvage on its walls.
Messrs. S. N. Butters and L. L. Jewell
made a trip to Yreka first of the week
and visited the celebrated “Dewey”
mine while in Siskiyou county. The
new tow^i of Carman has been located
near the Dewey and a smelter ie soon to
be constructed. They say the reports
about the mine are not exaggerate!.
The ledge is 100 foot in width and has
been prospected 260 feet in depth and
200 feet in on the ledge. Of the 100 feet
in width they say there is but 20 feet
waste. The ore runs from $15 to $200
per ton and already a million dollars in
ore has been blocked out. The com
pany is now shipping 25 tons a day to
the smelter at Keswick. They are
working50 men.—Grants Pass Observer.

NO. 2.
COUNTY SCHOOL NEWS
Miss Gertrude Richardson is in charge
of No. 67.
Miss Lelia Anderson has begun a sum
mer term in the Watkins district.
On account of poor health, Miss Hat
tie Eaton was compelled to close the
term in No. 10 a few days earlier than
was intended.
The people of Lake Creek district and'
some from adjoining districts crowded
in and abont the echool house on the
evening of May 30th to enjoy a program
rendered by pupils of .Miss Nellie Towne.
Selections were well chosen and rend
ered with a vigor that met with general
approval. The directors of this district
demand good teachers aud the patrons
are standing by their school in proper
shape.
The Dewey school is again at the
front. A year ago a successful program
and picnic closed the spring term and
gave such general sdtisfaction that it
was the wish of all to try the same plau
again. Last Friday, the pupilain charge
of their teacher, Miss Zuda Owens, gave
a program that was worth going miles
to hear. Patrons of the school and
friends from near and far were present.
The school house could not hold the
crowd but there was room outside and
much of it was appropriated. After the
program a feast was served by the
ladies, which in quality would tempt the
appetite of the most exacting epicure
and for quanity, was far in excess of the
demands of the hunrgy throng. The
Medford high school band furnished I
good music, and short speeches were
made by T. B. Ellison, N. L. Narregan
and G. A. Gregory. Patrons, teachers
and pupils are united in this district in
making the school the center of their
common interest.
