Father Blanchet A Prelate.
Portland Telegram.]
Right Rev. F. X. Blanchet, ot this
city, who is now traveling in Europe,
has been named Monsignor by the Pope,
thus being elevated to the rank of a pre
late with all its accompanying privilege.0.
The Apostollic brief naming Rev.
Blanchet Apostollic Pretonotary, was
received last Monday from Rome by
Archbishop Christie, through the Papal
delegate, Mgr. Martineili.
Th is distinguished honor enrolls
Father Blanchet among the members of
the highest of all colleges of Roman
prelates. It has been bestowed on him
in recognition of his valuable services
rendered to the Catholic Church of Ore
gon, during his career in the priesthood.
In the early church to Protonotaries,
says the Sentinel, was confided the
charge of collecting the acts of the mar
tyrs and transmitting them to posterity.
Their history, therefore, is bound up
with that of the church from the begin
ning, and this noble origin is still re
called in the duties of present-day Pro
tonotaries to labor in the canonization
of saints, and to take note in the re
ports of the propaganda of all authentic
evidence of sanctity wbicn may serve as
a base for a future process of canoniza
tion. These prelates form the notaries
of the church, and to it alone was trust
ed the valid expression in documentary
of the different acta of the administra
tion.
Upon his return to Portland. Mgr.
Blanchet, will be presented with the
Papal brief. As yet he knows nothing
of the honor awaiting him.
