In some manner the tree turned in fall ing and caught the unfortunate man be tween it and another tree, crushing him so badly that he died in a short time. A mass meeting was called at city hall Monday evening to express Ashland’s opinion on the seating of Congressman elect Brigham H. Roberts of Utah. The meeting was presided over by Rev. J. F. Tout and D. L. Rice acted as secretary. Prof. C. A. Hitchcock, principal of the Ashland public schools, made an anti Mormon and anti-polygamy speech which showed considerable investigation. President Tout having left three peti tions that were prepared at home, and the meeting was therefore unable to sign them, their purport was verbally ex plained and all male voters in favor of their adoption rose to their feet, being 31. Nays were not called for. Regret was expressed that Mayor Colton was not present to certify to the expression The mayor and six councilman were all absent. There were present in the house dur ing the meeting 53 men and 26 women, besides a number of children. A Nevada City, Cal., paper of Oct. 29th announces the wedding of Edward Mc Donald, second son of J. G. McDonald of Tolo, in this county, as follows: Edward McDonald of Shasta, who lived here some twenty years ago when a lad, and Miss Bertha M. Hallett of this city were married at nine o’clock last evening at the home of the lady’s par ents, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Hallett. Rev. J. Sims, pastor of the local Congrega tional church, performed the ceremony. The attending couple were Miss Hattie Hallett, the bride’s sister, and John Hill of Shasta. There were some 25 per sons present, the invitations being limi ted to relatives and intimate friends. The bouse was handsomely ornamented with floral displays. After the marriage a choice wedding supper was partaken of and there were speeches and music. Mr. and Mrs. McDonald have taken up their residence for the winter in Mrs. H. Stansfield’s house on Boulder street. Next spring they will go to Shasta to live. They are highly esteemed young people and have the good wishes of hun dreds of friends.
