Joaquin Miller, the poet of the Sierras
has perfected all arrangements for his
own funeral, and the incineration of his
mortal remains when his death comes.
If his wishes are carried out his body
will burned upon a funeral pyre of his
own building. On the top of an emi
nence back of Fruitvale, a suburb of
Oakland, California, the quaint man of
letters has built his bier. It is a solid
mass of masonry covering a space of
10x10 feet and standing 8 feet high. It
is composed of 620 granite bowlders set
in cement.
The queer structure is approached by
three immense steps laid across the en
tire west frontage, and of sufficient
height to permit bearers to place a body
on the top of the heap. The upper sur
face is hollowed out to tbe depth of two
feet in the shape of a coffin. This space
will be fllle<l with wood and the body of
the poet will be placed on top of it The
structure has been built so that a good
draft will fan the flames when the torch
is applied and assure the cremation of
the body. The ashes of the poet will
mingle with the ashes of the faggots to
be scattered to the 32 points of the com
pass by the winds that play about the
“The Heights.” This is the end the
poet of the Sierras has designed for him- i
self.
