Hartmann*« Slayer Acquit ted.
Frank G. Jones, tried at Gold Beach for
the killing of L. B. Hartman, a wealthy
man from the east while prospecting in the
mountains, was acquitted.
The Bandon Recorder says: It scema
from the evidence, as reported by parties
present at the trial, that Hartman had
first struck Jones upon the bead with a
; club and otherwise beat him a« Junes
I had a finger broken and was otherwise
injured. The blow on the head appears
to have dazed Jones so that he was not
j clear as to what happened immediately
afterward. Bat at the time of tbe shoot
ing it appeared that Jones took a gun and
ordered Hartmann off the place and that
Hartmann instead of leaving threw a
| club at Jones and then started at him.
